Hotel Tauernhof in Grossarl

We made an external reservation for a breakfast and weren’t disappointed at all, amazing food choices (including possibility to make your own waffles 🧇 or to have Kaiserschmarrn for breakfast 😍) and great energy of the place!

Family-driven hotel, perefect location, excellent and delicious food. Spa center and saunas are well maintaned, there are lot of options for kids and adults. Several sauna rooms, rest rooms, external pool with jakuzzi. Rooms however may require an upgrade with new bed/furniture to look more modern. The sofa in our room was worn and not clean. The mattress was worn as well, so the sleep quality was not up to expectations. This is the second time staying in this hotel.

Went here with the rest of my family (4 people) last august, the sights were amazing its location being not too far from the airport is great, lots to do within a 15 min drive.
I loved the fact that for breakfast you can make your own waffles whatever way you want in the morning and in the afternoon they is an ice-cream area with lots of toppings.
The 3 pools were great.
That staff went above and beyond in terms of service.
They have lots for kids to do from go-karts to a soft-play area.
Possibly my best summer holiday yet.
If you have the chance, it would be a mistake not to come here.

It was my first experience in Austria for a weekly holiday with my family, and I can admit with no doubt that this hotel provides anything one can imagine to make your stay unforgettable. Even if the weather was unpleasant with many rainy days, we enjoyed every moment at the hotel. All the staff was extremely kind and polite, the kitchen provides every day a plenty of home-made, bio, healthy, fresh food (also a gluten free alternative was provided). Room was spacious and cleaned perfectly daily, remaining respectful to the environment. Looking forward to visiting next year!

I stayed here for a week with my wife and children and the Tauernhof truly meets the definition of a great family friendly hotel, there are many activities for the children at the hotel: a small soft-play for the young children, a room with an arcade game, table football and air hockey for the larger children, two playgrounds, pedal go karts, and a petting zoo, and it feels safe enough to allow the children to play unsupervised.

My children tend towards being rather boisterous which can be difficult when travelling in case it disrupts the other guests, but the staff seemed actively happy to see children behaving as children.

The swimming pools are big enough that even at peak times on very hot days they don’t feel overcrowded, and my family and I spent many happy hours playing in the pools.

The set menu for adults available for half-board travellers is great: it focuses on simple local ingredients, cooked and presented at a high standard, but there is also plenty of choice in the more buffet style area for children who wish to eat more familiar foods. The design of the restaurant also really appealed to my aesthetic sensibilities.

Location is brilliant. It is less than one hour drive from Salzburg airport, with many family friendly things to do nearby. For my children, the highlight was the nearby Gleisterberg children’s hike, but even within a few minutes walk from the hotel there is another large playground, and various other things to do.

For adults, the spa is a very nice addition: there are several saunas of various temperatures, a steam room, many relaxing areas, a whirlpool and a small infinity pool with jacuzzi features. It was very nice for one of the parents to be able to go to a relaxing environment once the children were settling for bedtime.

My children are already asking when we can return!

All in all, we had a good holiday - not an all-time great holiday, but we had a fun time with friends and family. What we liked: 1) Location: Großarl is about an hour south of Salzburg, and the Großarltal is a beautiful valley with great hikes and fantastic views. 2) Hotel: Most of the hotel is quite freshly renovated and has a modern, yet alpine-rustic style. We liked our room, with its south facing balcony, and enjoyed some of the amenities a lot. Most notably: the kids playrooms & playground, and the pools (a large jacuzzi, one indoor-outdoor pool, one outdoor pool and a shallow kids pool). 3) Food: Breakfast was the meal of the day. A fantastic, big buffet with a few fun features such as the waffle maker that our son really enjoyed. Brilliant fresh bread, lots of local produce, and eggs made to order. What didn't work: 1) Building noise. The hotel next door, and several others in the village, are doing a huge renovations right now (June 2023). We counted 9 cranes standing in front of the hotel. The noise was constant from 6 am to past 9 pm. We could not use our balcony or leave windows open over night without getting a loud wake-up call - and the rooms were super stuffy with closed windows, so we did not manage to sleep in at all on our holiday. We also couldn't use the hotel's beautiful outdoor terrace - it was just too loud. We would have appreciated it if the hotel had informed us of the building works before we arrived, as we would have booked elsewhere. The discount we received at checkout, after complaining, didn't make up for lost sleep. 2) Evening meals: Generally the evening meals were good (salad buffet, 4 courses to choose from plus a cheese buffet); however, on one evening we sadly experienced a kitchen meltdown. There was a party elsewhere in the hotel, and the kitchen did not cope. We stayed in the restaurant for 2 hours, had a starter and soup, and after multiple complaints managed to get main courses for our children. Then we left, without having made it to the main course ourselves, as the kids just couldn't sit still any longer. The hotel responded to our feedback on this very well though, and we think/hope that this was a one-off issue. I would still rate this as a four-star experience (3.5 stars if that was an option on TripAdvisor), but it wasn't flawless. The generosity and superb organisation that we've been lucky enough to experience on other holidays in Austria were not present here, but it is a nice place to stay overall.
