Reviews
-Atmosphere. Has its positives and negatives. For positives, it would definitely be a crazy mixture of cultures. Ukrainians, Englishmen, Asians, Estonians, Russians... Everybody is friendly to each other and cooperates closely, at least during my stay. The neighbors in my room were also chill and nice.
-Location. Key benefit of this hostel - 20 euros for a bed in the heart of the city? Say less!
-Amenities. Very convenient that they have a communal kitchen! First time I'm seeing something like this available to guests of a hostel!
-Cleanliness. It is decent. Can't say more than that.
Downsides:
-Atmosphere again. The receptionist was a Russian person who somehow represents the incompatible combination of hospitality and care with grumpiness and coldness. Not the most skillful guy in tech, as it seems, as he failed to fetch my Booking reservation initially from their internal records, but that's a minor discomfort.
-Deposits. Keep in mind that they have a deposit system of 50 euros. I can tolerate that, but not the way it was taken off me, where I had to hand (!) my personal debit card to the receptionist for him to fill in the data! Cash was rejected under the pretense of "We once had a situation where we were almost scammed by the visitor with a banknote deposit". Probably because I am Russian myself, they explained the situation wholly; for foreigners, they are more likely to take cash from you (A visitor from Hungary before me on the checkout had one, no complaints from the receptionist). Thankfully, they were fair with their word; everything was written off and returned as it was in seconds at checkout.
-Building. I get it, it's an old town, still. It's a labyrinth of floors, turns, and narrow corridors! Be advised of it!
Service wise I was mostly helped by an older man, who was always nice/helpful. The location is fantastic (minus the fact that there’s a bar downstairs that is super loud, definitely bring ear plugs). Everything was quite clean and they even provided a towel for free.
Biggest pros:
- Location. Especially handy as it was hard to find public toilets in the city, so I was able to just pop back and use the hostel bathroom. Within walking distance of all the major sites.
- rooms are great. Excellent mattresses especially considering it’s a hostel, and big lockers that you choose the code to.
Biggest negatives:
- the noise outside can be super loud. Not really the hostel’s fault, but it seems like Estonian’s can find a reason to party every night of the week.
- curtains are sheer, so on top of ear plugs you’ll absolutely need a sleep mask as well. I think you can buy these from reception.
- for this with extra accessibility needs, it has lots of stairs and kinda maze like.
If you are scared of Russian language, this is not for you.
If you are a needy person that requires parties and staff Interaction, this place is not for you.
If you want a aesthetic, Instagramable hostel,
this place is not for you.
If you have light sleep, (there is noise from the bars and drunk people in the street, normal considering the location), this place is not for you.
This place is for you if you look for:
Prime location, middle of old town.
Good showers, very hot water and lots of showers and toilets available, all clean.
Super equiped and big kitchen, with tons of free ingredients like pasta, coffee, cereal, sugar, seasonings, tea, etc. Airfryer, microwaves, good stove and portable stove, lots of fridges, etc.
Good internet and even a computer available for free use.
Towel, bed clothes, all clean.
Big bedroom with big locker.
It's a very good hostel, I had a excellent experience.
Upon arrival, we found dirty bed sheets from previous guests. When this was brought to the owner's attention, she admitted to a "3-day cleaning rule." She justified the lack of clean linens by stating that the price we paid was too low to afford proper cleaning, suggesting that we deserved poor service due to the rate. Furthermore, the owner was highly unprofessional and dismissive when we raised these valid hygiene concerns.
Additionally, we experienced a significant lack of privacy, as the hostel administrator would randomly enter our rooms without knocking.
I am sharing this review because the current standards and the manner in which guests are spoken to are unacceptable. I hope you take these issues seriously to prevent other travellers from having a similar experience.
Communication was very poor. I left a travel blanket there. They didn't reply to an email or a WhatsApp message (their preferred modes). I was passing through Tallinn again and called in; a different receptionist found it immediately.
The staff are all friendly. They don't speak English. My Russian is basic so we used Google translate sometimes, which worked fine.
She was also sick but stayed in the room. When I asked about changing the room they didn't allow me to. It's not a clean hostel if you care about that and also didn't feel safe - I don't recommend
