Hotel Nikala in Telavi

The review is for restaurant only. It is a part of a very simple hotel Nikala, right next to the locally famous and quite fancy chateau Merani.

To me, this certainly is one of the better spots to taste local Kakheti food without any extras alone reinventions which, at least in my opinion, don’t really work with the hearty, generous and honest food.

The kebab (mzvadi) is charcoal grilled pork, marinated in onions, salt and pepper, khashlama, the local delicacy of boiled veal (don’t grimace, there’s plenty of tasty version although the dish can never sound particularly appetizing), chakapuli is lamb stewed with white qvevri wine and a ton herbs. Most of the more famous dishes are meats and here they have a properly homey feel to them which is exactly what you want. Have them with some eggplant with garlic and a mountain of freshly fried local mushrooms, finish off with chacha or just stick to wine all along.

You are guaranteed to be full and satisfied here and also learn a bit of authentic tastes.

Stopped by this local restaurant on our way to Tbilisi and were pleasantly surprised. Very good home made food and ample portions, good house wine, good service from the hosts, and not expensive at all.

Very natural and pleasant place , feel like home! Staffs were just like our good relatives , so kind hearted and sweet ! Food was great , everything was clean , wine was delicious 🥰

What a pleasant surprise to find to find this Gem of a place.
The food here is 1st class. The chef/owner should have a 5 star Michelin rating. I wish he would give cooking lessons.
The rooms are very clean, beds comfortable and so quiet. The grounds here are beautiful.

Overall food was good, service is friendly and prices are normal. BUT! MEGRELIAN KHACHAPURI was nothing like anything or any khachapuri at all, IT WAS AWFULL!
