It was one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve had in recent years. It is an absolutely stunning hotel, full of history that can be felt in every single room. The staff are incredibly kind, the breakfast is simply wonderful, with excellent, top-quality products, and they always try to fulfill any request whenever possible.
A special mention goes to the owner, Mrs. Eva, who is a truly wonderful woman, with a kindness that is so rare to find nowadays. I truly hope to return soon to this place, which made me feel at home and gave me so many emotions.

The German experience we were looking for!

Such a delightful stay from beginning to end. Eva, (the owner), her family, and her staff made sure we wanted for nothing. Our luggage was carried to our room for us. This was a huge blessing since there aren’t any elevators. Our space was truly a gift from God. 3 middle aged women from the States, wanted to share a space and not be separated. Understanding this desire, Eva came to the rescue offering us the 3rd floor. Typically used for conferences. It came with more than what we could have hoped for.

We immediately began to explore this beautifully decorated floor. The eclectic furnishings provided much interest. Vintage rugs as wall hangings. She used curtains to hide the electrical box. Linens that just begged one to take a rest. A bathroom that could easily accommodate the 3 of us getting ready for the day. The half bath had a pull chain to flush the toilet. A unique surprise for sure. There was even a dog bed in the loft area. The conference rooms could easily be used for 10 or more people in each of the several rooms off the loft.

Breakfast each morning made this historical landmark feel more like a bed and breakfast. A basket of bread, coffee, tea, juice, eggs, yogurt, meats and fruit left us feeling satisfied and ready to head out for the adventure of the day. The tables have white linen tablecloths with beautiful white orchids. Rich dark wooded walls with stained glass windows, invited you to stay longer and not rush through breakfast.

Walking out the front door led us to shops, cafes, and bars. Inside/outside dining allowed us the pleasure of sampling true German foods. A few minutes walk led us to the Hofgarten, a must for all to experience.

And finally on our last day, Eva’s son drove us to the Munich airport using the hotel van at a reasonable price. This was also a gift, considering we didn’t want to take the train again.

It was difficult to say good-bye but I believe we’ll be back and we will absolutely stay at the Goldener Anker! You should too! You will feel like royality.

This is the second time I have stayed at The Goldener Anker -- last year my wife and I stayed there for two nights while attending the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival, and this past weekend we returned with our young daughters (13 and 9). Everything about The Goldener Anker is superb: The location on the old main square is the best in town -- just a few meters away from the Margravial Opera House and within easy walking distance of the major historical sites. We stayed in the spacious and newly restored "Puccini Suite," which features a gigantic four-poster bed as well as a separate room offering beautiful bunk beds for my daughters -- all the rooms and common areas throughout the hotel are exquisitely furnished with tasteful antiques and sumptuous fabrics that ooze Old World Charm. The bathroom was enormous and featured both a vintage clawfoot bathtub as well as a shower. Apart from the classy and extremely comfortable accommodations, the service was consistently excellent. The owner, Eva Graf, is the fourteenth generation of her family to run the hotel, which she does with love, kindness and exceptional attention to detail and to the guests' wishes. The staff is multilingual and always eager to help. The WiFi worked perfectly, and the adjacent parking garage was most convenient. Of course, there are no lifts or air conditioning in such a historic building, but if you're looking for such modern conveniences in a bland characterless highrise, go stay at the Ibis -- I'll take authentic Old World Charm any day. We enjoyed an excellent late dinner (Oxtail Soup, Smoked Trout, Entrecote, Parfait) in the cozy paneled dining room after the opera, served by Eva herself. The tasty and well prepared gourmet dishes were served on fine china and the delicious wine poured into sparkling crystal glasses, which only enhanced the classic Old World ambience. After such a late night, we wandered down to breakfast later than usual, but it was no problem. The breakfast menu is extensive (eggs, bacon, ham, fresh juices, fresh breads and croissants with homemade marmalades, yogurts, muesli, cheeses, cold cuts, etc.) all sourced from local farmers and bakers. We are used to enjoying fresh croissants from a French bakery several times a week, and my daughters couldn't stop raving about those served at The Goldener Anker! Our table was graced with beautiful fresh orchids, and we were delighted to hear the Sunday morning churchbells ringing out across the square as we indulged in our luxurious late breakfast. It is not inexpensive, but considering the consistently high quality of the experience, we believe The Goldener Anker offers exceptional value -- and I believe that other discerning travelers will agree. We did not wish to leave, and we will certainly be back!

This wonderful traditional hotel, with its personal service and careful attention to the needs of its guests, always lives up to its reputation as the best hotel in Bayreuth. This year my partner and I stayed for four nights during the Wagner Festival, taking in the opera "Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg" and enjoying a relaxing break. This hotel is our favourite, and was the favourite of my late father and mother, who also stayed there numerous times for the Wagner FestiWe stayed in the newly-refurbished "Puccini Suite", which is superbly appointed, with a huge four-poster bed, luxurious bathroom with shower/wet room and free-standing batch, and a side room with bunk beds, to delight young children. The pace of life in the hotel is gentle, civilised and tailored to suit the needs of the opera-going guests. It is fine to come down for breakfast at 11 a.m., and there is no hurry, the service continues all morning, with lovely home-made preserves, fresh bread, and cooked items prepared to order. For opera-goers, a complimentary glass of Champagne is provided at 3 p.m. in the hotel lobby, overseen by the hotel owner, Eva Graf, before the guests depart by taxi for the short journey across town to the Festspielhaus on the Green Hill. A three-course Table d'Hote dinner enhanced with local Franconian wines is available as late as 11 p,m, after the opera has finished. Dining, conversation and discussion of the evening's performance can go on as late as 2.30 a.m. with the hotel proprietress and staff present even at that late hour. I should also say that as the hotel was established in 1753, due to the building's structure, it has not been possible to install a lift or air-conditioning, However, the comfort and standard of the accommodation in both private and public rooms, together with the friendly and personal approach more than compensate. We hope to be lucky enough to visit again and enjoy such exceptional hospitality.

I simply cannot recommend this hotel. Firstly we were charged 668 Euros a night - it was more expensive than the 5 star hotel we came from in Munich. We were visiting the music festival so thought that was why the price was high, having stayed in the town before we were told this was the best hotel, so were happy to pay the price. What a mistake. Our room looked like an old peoples home from the 1970's and I don't think anything had been dusted since the 70's either! There were no less than 3 light bulbs not working - we had to ask 4 times for get them replaced, we were on the verge of going out and buying new ones ourselves! It was very very dusty, when I sat on a chair dust clouds almost caused a fog in the room!! The breakfast which was included was really below standard, the bread was not fresh, and the choice was really not good enough. The cooked eggs we ordered were so uder cooked they were not good to eat, oh any wed waiting 25 minutes for them! The staff couldn't speak english and very very young and no "hospitality" training. I was in the shower one morning and a maid came into our bedroom and tried to start cleaning - I simply couldn't believe that it wasn't safe to have a shower without a stranger entering the room!! The wallpaper in the room was peeling off, oh and there is no air conditioning - it was 35 degrees and we were give in tiny little fan! I could go on!!! My advice is give it a miss!

Clean and comfortable rooms, very friendly personnel like you do not see it anymore, fantastic breakfast with lots of choices and home made marmalade! Massive silver cutlery and coffee can!

I recently had the upmost pleasure of staying in the Goldener Anker in Bayreuth.
The hotel was beautiful and unique. I was warmly greeted by a real person on reception and my bags were carried up to the room for me.
My room was clean spacious and decorated fantastically in red. My ensuite was gleaming with all the extras you would like tissues, shower gel, lotion, mirrors, towels of every size and a comfort box with a shower cap, ear plugs, cotton pads and buds.
The bed was comfortable and the hotel nice warm and cozy.
My breakfast was delicious served by friendly staff in an elegant dining room with white table clothes and real silver cutlery. The food was great, cooked perfectly and included goose, trout and beef, the chef excellent.
I got a sneaky peak into some of the other bedrooms all different and exquisite.
I took time to look around Bayreuth and also took the train (station only a few minutes walk from the hotel) to Nuremberg to the Christmas market there.
Overall I was just over joyed that hotels like this still exist, unique, quirky, with wonderful attention to detail in all areas.
An awesome, relaxing, enjoyable experience for me all round.
