This is very much a cheap but fine hotel. They obviously run on a small staff, but the staff they have are friendly and helpful. We probably had the worst room in the hotel. It was right next to the restaurant which shares the location with the hotel. So on the weekend it was extremely loud. Extraordinary buildings renovated in a lovely way to fulfill the five star feeling of the hotel (this really old stone and brick castle). Fireplaces with live fires going in the evenings are cosy. My girlfriend and I stayed at the Ibis Styles Hotel in Gelsenkirchen while we were in town to watch the HSV match — and it turned out to be a great choice for the trip. Located from 5-10 mins. walk from Essen Hbf. Very quiet and staff is helpful. Free one glass of beer or coke is available at the time of check-in. If you want to go shopping, go walk for 10 mins. and then you'll reach Limbecker Platz. There's REWE (supermarket) and you can grab some German sweets for gifts. :)

Perfect place to stay if you are attending an event at Veltins Arena. The lovely young lady at the front desk even gave a small group of us a ride to the venue. And she was so pleasant and friendly.
