Great location, but terrible facilities!

Rooms are run down, in need of a complete clean and refurbishment.

No soap, very little toilet roll provided and no mirror.

Air conditioning only works in some of the rooms.

We booked a double room with AC only to be provided with bunk beds instead.

Walls are cracked, holes in plaster and paint is peeling.

Bed sheets are dirty and scratchy. The mattress were stained and old with springs completely gone.

No hot water in the shower, no shower rail, toilet cistern was falling off the wall.

Windows are covered in strange stickers and the sound proofing is terrible.

Service is poor, staff do little to make your stay more comfortable.

However, price is low considering location is superb.

We did survive but would not recommend for families or a romantic stay. Better for solo-travllers or those who don't mind a rough-and-ready place to sleep.

As it was Me, who back in 1997 suddely found myself in charged of re-storing ThecOldxPetra Hostel. I talked the 2 old Palestinians brother Mr Nabil and Mr Nadir into re-opening / restoring the 'lower parts of what today is part of the Petra Hostel. I did re-wire the whole buildings electricy (as far at I was allowed to spend money on the project, did manage a goup of other backpackers to cleanout the 14 some rooms that had been un-used since 1947. So I think I'm one of those peop, still alive today that know this old building better than anybody. I have been reading the reviews from back in 2006 and it seems clear to Me that the WARM & busteling place I called home for more than a year, only has deteriorated into bad service and lack of cleanliness.. I find this to be a big Shane as I have many fond and special memories from Jerusalem Old City and it's many friendly people- mostly the kind Palestinians who had shops caround King David Street I wish to send my Greetings to any body who I might have run into at the Petra Hostel, like Tobias from Stuttgart, Germany, the very correct and friendly Erik and his Wife who was a good mate and did a lot of the heavy work amongst others.. Greetings from TheDanishHandymanofJerusalem aka Mr Farid aka Lucifer aka Per B. Sørensen from

Dirtiest place I've ever slept. The beds had not been changed, leftover food was scattered on the bed. The mattresses look like they came from the dump, full of holes, bumps and yellow spots. The ants walk over the mattress. Nothing seems to be done about maintenance and cleaning. Service is kept to the bare minimum. The only positive is the location. Terrible.

During my recent stay at Petra Hostel in Jerusalem, I had a less-than-pleasant experience that left me feeling disappointed and uncomfortable. The hostel's location was convenient, and the room rates were affordable, but unfortunately, the overall atmosphere and service fell short of expectations. One of the significant issues I encountered was the cleanliness of the place. The hostel appeared to be in need of some serious maintenance and cleaning. The common areas, including the bathrooms and the lobby , were not up to the standard I would have expected from a reputable establishment. The lack of cleanliness made it challenging to feel comfortable during my stay. Additionally, as a single female traveler, I encountered some uncomfortable situations with the older man at the front desk. While I don't want to make any unfounded accusations, I felt that his behavior was often inappropriate and unprofessional. He seemed to shout frequently and made me and some other female guests feel uneasy with his comments and stares. I believe that every guest should feel safe and respected during their stay, regardless of their gender or background. It is essential for hostel management to ensure that all staff members adhere to a code of conduct that promotes a welcoming and harassment-free environment. I had high hopes for Petra Hostel based on its online reviews, but my experience left me regretting my choice. I hope that the management takes these concerns seriously and takes steps to improve the cleanliness and professionalism of their establishment, making it a more comfortable place for all guests.

Paid 65 ILS for 1 night - cheaper than most places around maybe, but you get what you pay for - garbage. I would pay 108 ILS any day again to stay in The Post Hostel (with breakfast!) or others. No door key. Unmaintained walls and cold(!) room. Unbalanced bed frames. Unwashed and broken linen. No blanket cover. Broken shower. 3-4 hanging power sockets to 8 people. The location is great (inside the Old City), but you have plenty amazing alternatives within 5-10 minutes walk (outside the Old City). Overall, disgusting place with very low standards - will never go back!

Location, without a doubt, is perfect.
Everything else is awful. From a melted plug meant for the electric water heater, gross matresses, stains on the walls and floors, a hidden array of plugs and a recording device (no idea where the cameras were, whether outside the room or inside, but the proprietor was extremely strange when questioned). Also, more expensive than other hostels, wifi only works in the sparce "common area" with a few chairs, I heard there was no kitchen but do not have first hand experience of this. Booked for three nights, left as soon as the sun rose and will not be returning after the first night. Photos found online are misleading. I was in the Army for 6 years and this was one of the worst places I've ever stayed.

Great price and outstanding location. All one might ask from a backpacker hostel. The dormitory's facilities are makeshift and rather shabby but in fine working condition; plenty of hot water, good water pressure and very clean.
Will come back

Due to the riots in December we couldn't reach the place, but it didn't stop the hostel to charge us for the full stay...although we asked them to cancell, they took the money a few days afterwards. no comments

Wonderful location! The building has an unpleasant smell, hard to support more than a day. Very nice people.

To be very honest quite rubbish place, dirty and very old. However it is one of the cheapest, located in a heart of the old city and has cool roof top.
