Shimoda Kaihin Hotel in Shimoda

There were cockroaches, all kinds of cockroaches. Large cockroaches scurried around the room, medium-sized ones lay on the floor of the game room, and small ones burrowed into the tatami mats.

Actually, the small cockroaches weren't scary, but what was annoying was that they might crawl into your luggage and then follow you home. That was quite irritating.

Otherwise, everything was fine. The hotel staff were very friendly. The hotel is right by the sea, very convenient, no doubt about it.

However, if you're particularly afraid of cockroaches, it's best to find a newer hotel. Older hotels are likely to have cockroaches, since they're mostly made of wood. There's a Keikyu hotel nearby, twice the price, but it's definitely a "clean" hotel.

Negative:
It’s an old hotel. The rooms are very smelly, because smoking is allowed in the rooms. We didn’t know when we booked so I was disappointed.
Positive things:
The staff is very kind and brought an air purifier into our room.
5* to the staff members and the views, but the building needs a lot of cleaning or a solid renovation.

The food is amazing! Wide variety of Japanese dishes to try of from the buffet for breakfast and dinner!
Spacious rooms if you don’t mind or not sensitive to the smell.
