Shimoda Yamatokan in Shimoda

This place is a gem! Onsen with an ocean view was great, beach is perfectly swimmable, food was amazing! Really loved the place: traditionally-styled ryokan room, locks are cool (weird to put it in review but using them was a pleasure! lol). Everything else is well-maintained. Loved the hotel, I think it'll be much better this way rather than being upgraded with modern digital toys like keycards etc. The way it's now it perfectly preserves its soul, time and beauty.

Wonderfully located hotel with kind staff. We were greeted at the reception and treated with local sweets while waiting for check in. The hotel is a great place if you do surfing. The dinners and breakfast were extremely delicious. There are 2 onsens, western style and Japanese style, both are great (the only disturbing thing was a noisy filter in the western onsen’s jacuzzi).
However, the biggest con of the hotel is roof leakage. I felt unsafe thinking about electrical safety in this kind of conditions. We were visiting during the rainy season, so this might be a reason why it was so wet. But I really hope that this issue will be resolved soon, because besides this, the hotel is one of the greatest for beach leisure in Izu. I’d really love to come back.

Not modernised but fantastic experience in a ryokan. Has onsite indoor and open air onsen. Large rooms too.

Nearby there is fermenco which is great italian sourdough however by car not walking.

Had the most incredible solo stay at Shimoda Yamatokan! The hotel is amazing, the staff are so helpful and kind, and the beachfront view and access could not be better. The onsens were incredible and I had the most relaxing 3 nights. My room had a gorgeous beach view and was very spacious. This was a great place to solo travel, and I can’t wait to come back here with my partner!

I purchased the meal add on and the traditional breakfasts and dinners were delicious and truly an experience (but very large). Location is ideal super easy access to Shimoda town center via ~10 minute bus ride and the hotel has a shuttle service as well

Directly at a nice beach with a great view over it. Very spacey room, with hot bath on your own balcony/terrace. The service was outstanding starting from when we parked. And the reception paperwork was the nicest one I ever experienced: we were seated with tea and a small sweet dish while the paperwork was done.

This hotel exceeded all my expectations! From the cleanliness and comfort of the room to the incredibly friendly and helpful staff, everything was top-notch. The breakfasts were simply magnificent, and the dinners were a true culinary delight. The stunning view from the window was the perfect complement to my stay. I highly recommend this hotel—it's the perfect place for an unforgettable vacation!

This hotel is located far away. But we do not regret that we went. It is a little old inside, but the rooms are spacious and cozy. The view of the ocean is gorgeous. Dinner is delicious, breakfast is an acquired taste. The transfer was waiting at the station.

There were no waves on this trip, but the location and the beautiful sea were soothing 😆 The smiles of the staff were also soothing 🤭

The nearby scenery is very beautiful, close to the sea, you can watch the sunrise in the morning, definitely worth recommending 👍👍
