Reviews
However, this place deserves it, mainly because of the unsanitary conditions in which the kitchen, the shower, and the washrooms are kept.
In the shower, everything is covered with mold. It’s honestly ridiculous, and I wonder if the place has ever been cleaned. Besides the main shower, there’s another one (which is not functional) that they had to close because of the same problem.
The kitchen sink and fridge are full of food residue, and the smell is terrible. I wanted to cook, but it was so disgusting that I preferred not to.
The washroom smells like cat litter, and the control besides the toilet seat is covered with human waste.
The sinks are moldy and dirty.
The worst thing about it is the fact that the owner is there all the time, just staring at people — and he doesn’t even clean.
I was very disappointed because I’ve stayed in some really sketchy hostels before and never found any place as dirty as this.
I don’t know why even the owner keeps running that place? How can someone live like that? It should be cleans everyday everywhere as this is a GUEST HOUSE and not a cartoon under a bridge.
Pay a lil extra and you will get private room in a nice guest house.
It’s very far from the city center, and if you’re thinking of buying the Tokyo daily transport pass, it’s useless because it’s so far away that it’s not covered.
As for cleanliness, it’s disgusting — there’s only one shower in the entire hostel, and it’s very dirty and horrible. The photo of the shower doesn’t show the rest of how bad it really is, and the pictures they posted are very misleading, making it look much nicer than it actually is.
The living room shown in the photos is actually closed off, as it’s where the owner lives. The owner also uses the only shower available and one of the two bathrooms in the whole hostel.
It’s absolutely not worth it!!
This guest house is not for tourists or families. It's best enjoyed when you already know Japan and don't expect anything more than a bed and some company. If you speak the language, the owner might just take you on a daydrinking tour around Ueno...
This guesthouse is therefore recommended to seasoned backpackers and young people who like to keep things simple. Tourists, families and those seeking a comfortable stay: stop trying to save every penny and book a real hotel, or you'll end up disappointed.
The host is pretty quiet but is a nice guy. Other guests were quiet when I was there.
The hostel itself is a dump. The shower is unsanitary. There were chunks of mold growing on the ceiling, in between the cracks of the doors and all over the bathtub- I couldn't believe it I was in absolute shock.
The hostel owner was aggressive. While checking out (which is 10am) we were running behind because we got lost on a train coming back from Shibuya. We were 10 minutes late checking out and he stood at the entrance of the dormitory to watch us pack and was yelling at us. We've never had this problem at any other hostel ever.
Overall this place is a big disappointment. I don't know why anyone would ever want to stay here. Apart from the bacteria mold growing toxic and infested hostel itself, it is not close to anything and it's very hard to access any fun parts of the city and train tickets become expensive.
If you are new to traveling Japan, please be advised that the trains do not operate all night either. The trains from the Aoto Station - which is this hostels station stop running at 8pm!!!!. So if you miss the train, the only way home is by taxi and it is very hard to get the taxi to take you the whole way back, let alone a $200 USD fare charge. You do not want to stay this far away from Shibuya, Harijuku or Tokyo. If you can find a place that is an hour walk away for 25 minute subway ride away, that is ideal.
Overall this place is terrible and disgusting. Very very disappointed with our stay here.
