The Howard Hotel in Sliema

We’ve booked a “standard double or twin room” and the room looked nothing like the pictures on Booking.com. When we went down to the reception to inform what our options were, we were told to come back the next morning to see if any rooms became available they could move us to. Because of the extremely unpleasant smell, loud AC, poor conditions in the bathroom, and uncomfortable bed, we booked a night at another hotel to get some proper sleep. When we came back the next morning, we were shown two different rooms very similar to the first one. There was one other room that looked like the room from the pictures (although there was a large boiler in the bathroom which was not shown on the pictures), but it was available for only 2 out of 3 nights + we’d have to pay extra despite it being the room advertised to us in the first place. We therefore decided to move to a different hotel altogether, since no reasonable solution was offered. The manager who was supposedly an hour away suddenly appeared at the reception and upon seeing us check out, took us apart in the restaurant. She mentioned that if we would give them a 5-star review, we would get an 80% refund. We thought this was rather strange and will now sort things out with Booking.com. If anyone takes anything away from this whole story, please let it be that what you see on the pictures for a Standard Double room is not what you will receive and think about whether it’s worth the price for you.

Their standard room is a prison cell
The room resembled a prison cell, with small windows overlooking the back of the building, where the air conditioning and other equipment are located, and covered in immense amounts of dust. The room didn't seem clean; the bathroom had slimy, mouldy areas, and the towels and bed linens had probably been whitened a few years ago. And this is what they call a "standard" room.
