Reviews
The boat transfer was well organised and the snorkeling itself was very nice. The lighthouse, the crabs and the night sky are memorable and worth seeing. However, the coral reef is clearly in poor condition, with large areas bleached or dead, which was disappointing.
The guided island tour was a low point: staff spoke in an overly patronising way, as if addressing small children, which was quite irritating. The so-called “crab walk,” promoted as an eco highlight, lasted literally five minutes and lacked enthusiasm or depth.
Lunch was excellent, but dinner was essentially the same meal, prepared slightly less well & with poorer variety. For this price range, a dessert consisting of a few pieces of watermelon and two dates is simply not acceptable. Dinner is also rushed: after returning from the short crab walk, our table had already been cleared, forcing guests back to their huts by 21:00.
The huts are very basic, which you expect to some extent as it is an eco lodge, but the interior feels rather sparse and poorly finished.
In summary: a nice experience with real potential, but the service feels on autopilot. Given the price, much better service and overall experience can be found elsewhere in Africa or Zanzibar. Notably, there was a volunteer marine biologist on the island — it is unclear why this expertise was not used during the walks or tours.
We spotted sting rays, sharks, star fishes and many many more. The variety of corals is great. Perfect for snorkeling or just a swim.
Recommended staying 2 nights. The forest accompanying the island is great as well.
This has clearly paid off because the snorkling here was more enjoyable than every other location we visited whilst in Zanzibar. The sheer number and variety of species we saw were heartening, and testament to the great conservation work that is happening here. My wife was able to see black tipped reef sharks on multiple occasions, and we both saw turtles, pufferfish, clownfish and parrot fish, among many more.
I would like to offer sincere thanks to several of the staff in particular, who worked so hard to make our stay wonderful:
Vera was tremendously helpful and informative about the work done on the island, and we both thoroughly enjoyed conversing with her on all topics.
Margaret took us on a forest walk and showed us up the tower, and was again incredibly informative and passionate about the island and the ecosystem .
Ali was tremendously hard-working and diligent in looking after us at mealtimes and at the bar.
J2 was a superb guide for crab walking and snorkling, and kindly took us out for additional trips in the morning and the evening, where we were lucky enough to see an abundance of marine wildlife.
