Description

HANCHI is a 3-star hostel in Istanbul offering 68 rooms spread over a 4-floor building. It provides a range of room types including dorm beds, standard family rooms, and deluxe double and quadruple rooms. Guests have access to 24-hour front desk service, free Wi-Fi, a bar, restaurant, shared kitchen, luggage storage, and laundry service. The hostel includes amenities like a garden and games room. Breakfast is included with simple offerings such as bread, eggs, and jam. While rooms are generally affordable and some guests found them spacious and comfortable, cleanliness has been a recurring issue in bathrooms and some rooms, with reports of water leaks and pest sightings. The staff is available 24/7 but communication and helpfulness vary according to reviews. The property is suitable for travelers seeking budget accommodation near Istanbul’s historical center but expect basic facilities and occasional noise from nearby nightlife.

Location

HANCHI is located in Istanbul's Kumkapi area, 45 km from Istanbul Airport and about 13 km from Ataturk Airport. It sits just 200 meters from the sea. The hostel is within walking distance to many major landmarks: the Grand Bazaar is 830 meters away, the Hippodrome 880 meters, and the Blue Mosque 1.1 km. Other attractions like the Basilica Cistern, Hagia Sophia, and Suleymaniye Mosque are roughly 1.3 km away. The Spice Market and Gulhane Park lie about 1.6 km from the property. Nearby dining options include Restaurant Kor Agop 23 meters away, Akvaryum Restaurant 138 meters, and Evren Restaurant 150 meters. The nearest train station is a 3-minute walk, but the closest tram station is a 12-minute uphill walk.

Tips

  • Bring your own lock for the locker as the hostel requires purchasing one separately.
  • Prepare for narrow stairs when carrying large luggage.
  • Consider earplugs to mitigate noise from nearby nightlife and other guests.
  • Also, bring your own toiletries and slippers since bathrooms can be moldy and not always clean.

If you see price it's very low so good for those who need a stay in less price.
Pros: spacious room, good breakfast, lively area, colorful evening, good storage.
Cons: poor cleanliness, water leakage in bathroom, stains on room floor, staff not very helpful. You have to ask everything by yourself or just assume things or just miss all those amenities included in your room price. TV not working, staff came, checked and simply it's not working and even if it works it only has 4 or 5 Turkish channels. Kitchen is 24 hours open to use but you need to carry and buy everything by yourself, even no water to drink.

I have dust mite allergies. I definitely don't recommend it. The bugs are crawling all over my skin and biting me. My whole skin is burning. The bed is dirty 🥺

My stay at Hanchi Hostel was absolutely the worst hostel experience I have ever encountered. The premises were filthy, the atmosphere was chaotic, avoid this place if you value cleanliness and comfort. I strongly recommend finding alternative accommodation in Istanbul. (Wabi hostelsis good)

I had a terrible experience at this property. The room was not clean, and I actually saw rats inside the room. It was unsafe and unhygienic to stay there. I immediately informed the hotel staff, but they did not solve the problem. I had to leave at night and find another hotel on my own.
This is completely unacceptable. I strongly advise others not to book this place until proper cleaning and pest control are done.

+ I've traveled 110,000 kilometers on a motorcycle across China and backpacked through more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe, and Oceania. I started a month-long trip to Turkey in August. I stayed in hotels in the east and stayed in hostels starting in Goreme. Hanchi is the cheapest and most cost-effective hostel since Goreme. The $12 bed includes breakfast. I booked a mixed room for 12, but I was given a 6-person female room with personal lockers and air conditioning. The space is spacious, and the public areas are beyond imagination: a restaurant and bar on the first floor, a kitchen and dining table and chairs on the rooftop, and coffee tables and chairs in front of the door. These public spaces are open 24 hours a day, allowing guests to enjoy a lazy time at any time. I stayed there for 5 consecutive days. A Filipino sister I met on the road recommended this hostel to me, and I stayed there without a second thought. Now I recommend it to you 12 points, and you will definitely not be disappointed!

The hostel rooms are very cheap, and you can book them quite spontaneously. This also makes it possible to change rooms once you’re there. The guests (at least in my case) were friendly, though of course there’s no guarantee. The staff’s English isn’t the best, but communication works, and there’s always someone available 24/7.

The rooms are fairly clean, but oh my god—the bathrooms are horribly dirty. Definitely bring slippers with you! There’s mold, everything is always wet, poorly cleaned, and quite run-down.

The cooking area and common room are actually pretty nice. You can cook there and hang out, both indoors and outdoors. It’s not as filthy as the bathrooms, but not exactly clean either. The facilities are simple but useful enough.

There’s no lift, only stairs. Lockers are available, but unfortunately you need to buy a lock there (which really should be included). For reference: a suitcase about 35–40 cm wide fits just barely inside, while one around 65 cm high fits well, with enough space left for a medium-sized backpack.

Breakfast is very simple (bread, spread, and an egg). It’s not a buffet—everyone just gets one plate. I never used this service, but it’s nice that it’s offered.

One downside: there are a lot of parties going on until late at night. You’ll hear music, laughing, and talking at least until 1 a.m.

On the plus side, the hostel is right next to the most important sights and attractions—you’re truly in the middle of the action, which I really liked.

I am very grateful to have stayed here during my trip to Istanbul.
Hanchi, the staff are very friendly.

Especially Johan's low-key, careful, smart and kind

Stayed here for 6 days
It is highly recommended to book a room with two beds
The room is completely dark and quiet after turning off the lights.
So that my head can have enough rest

Breakfast is bread, eggs and jam
But I never tire of eating it

Selling bottled water, drinks or cup noodles
The prices are very cheap

Personally, I think if you stay here
Free breakfast is a must

Because there aren’t many choices outside early in the morning.

My favorite is to sit down on the rooftop and enjoy the day and night views

In addition, the location of the hotel is very convenient to the train station or to scenic spots on foot.

3 minutes walk to the train station
Ten minutes to major attractions
Twenty minutes walk to the airport bus station

Definitely recommend booking a 2 bed room

I got to know each other after living alone in this room for 6 days
3 friendly roommates from different countries

Thank you Johan for your kind consideration and arrangements

Location is a bit far from bus station or metro station.. Have to walk for 15 mins..
Room was okay.. Just the shower door quite narrow.. I think better to use curtains instead.. But overall good.. We stayed for 3 nights here and so many restaurants nearby..
