Since most people check the bad stuff first, I think it's best to post this here:
My name is Laura, I've been working at the Alter Keller Restaurant since 2018 and I love my job. You may have noticed me on your last visit. :)
As the hospitality industry gets tough, I need to speak up for my restaurant to my guests and future guests.
We are one of the smallest hotels & restaurants in the heart of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, we all do our best and work with passion. We are all trained professionals.
Each meal is freshly prepared by our chef and owner Markus. Every guest is warmly welcomed by Miriam, his wife and owner, who works in the restaurant and hotel. Both work 24/7.
Due to Corona, many hotels and restaurants have lost their staff, closed their kitchens and no longer serve meals. The side effects are that not every guest who will have a hotel room for the night will also find a place for dinner. The calculation doesn't add up.
We've had a lot of frustrated potential guests lately who we had to turn away because we were fully booked. As well as telling us that they have been looking for a place in the city in the evening for a long time. However, if you don't reserve a table, you will be rejected everywhere and have only booked a bed & breakfast hotel yourself.
Please note that we try to accommodate as many guests as possible, but we have limited space, places and time. Since we only have 13 tables in the restaurant, we are quickly booked out.
In order to find you a way out of this stressful situation and to satisfy your desire for a warm meal after a long day of hiking and sightseeing, we have our reservations in time windows from 17:30-19:30 and 19:30-22:00 clock changed. Our tables on the terrace in the summer are usually only kept on good luck for your spontaneous visits.
If you are the lucky one we can accommodate even though we are fully booked. We ask you for a moment of calmness. We need 5-10 minutes to clear the table for you freely and cleanly.
We have to plan our few staff carefully, and with limited regular working hours for our employees, we usually close our kitchen just after 8 pm. Due to the lack of staff and chefs, most other restaurants have to do the same and close their kitchens early.
Most of my guests are stressed out on vacation and I really wonder why?
I can understand that traveling is exhausting, but when you bring your stress with you and try to rush through your dinner, you have to deal with ruining it yourself.
We are a small Bavarian-Franconian steak restaurant. The good ratings come from our guests who appreciate authentic German home cooking. We are not awarded by Michelin stars or similar classifications. We never said we were a high-end restaurant.
We serve honest meals. Each guest has a different taste and expectation that we try to meet every day.
As we are not a fast-food chain we try to be as quick as possible, but our staff is limited by two hands and two feet.
On weekends and busy evenings, we expect you to bring some time when you enter our very busy restaurant. If you relax and take your time, your entire experience will be enjoyable.
The last few weeks have been busy and exhausting. We had some "nice" experiences. I can understand that things are getting frustrated, but there's no reason to use me, and the rest of our staff, as your bad mood and stress outlet.
Please remember we are all humans.

Some red flags starting showing early however we were hungry and ordered nonetheless, but we could already notice the service was not great, which got even more apparent as the dinner went on and we could see how other guests were being treated, needless to say they are not the friendliest bunch, and if you don’t speak German, you made be rudely treated.
We should have also noticed the disappointed looks in some of the guest faces, since it could have prepared us for what was to come: an almost flavorless Käsespätzle, and a poorly cooked steak.
Sure steak can be hard to cook and there is technique in getting it cooked to the preferred term, however if you cannot properly cook it, then you probably should not offer it. When asked I requested something a bit more cooked than medium, which they noted as medium plus, what I got was a poorly seasoned steak that had been cooked on the outside and was still quite rare in the middle, and I don’t mean the nice pink of a juicy steak, I mean the dark red of raw meat, a pity really. To be fair their fries were nice and their butter did go well with the meat, however in a steak dish it should be the meat that shines.
Cannot say anything about their desserts since we hurried up, payed and left after such a disappointment. Can’t recommend this and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a bad reaction to this honest review considering how they treat their guests.
