Angeles Inn in Venice

My wife doesn't like Airbnbs because she likes the personal touch of a real place. Although Angeles Inn bills itself as a personal and friendly place, this was not our experience. Although we arrived at the eminently reasonable hour of 5pm, we were told not very far in advance via WhatsApp that we had to check in online which wasn't great since it was fairly elaborate and I was using bad train wifi since I don't use cellular data while traveling. So there was no one to greet us. In fact, the only time we met anyone was when we were required to pay the tourist tax in cash and he seemed very nice but did not seem to speak English very well (which is fine but is limiting in a tourist context). Otherwise, it was totally anonymous and impersonal although there is some cleaning service provided (more on that below since it became a problem)

My greatest gripe, however, is my wife and I were woken on the second night of our stay by a swarm of mosquitoes. Now we live in Canada and are used to mosquitoes but not even camping in our wilderness have I ever been attacked so brutally. The mosquitoes must have picked up the Venetian animosity towards tourists. I thought it was too early for them since it was just April and not very warm. In any event, even though we killed a dozen throughout the night, there were more and more and the constant buzzing and biting made for an atrocious and badly interrupted sleep (something that we cherished on this trip since we were traveling for the first time without our small children). Now you can say it's not fair to blame the Angeles Inn for acts of nature but here's the thing. The next day I noticed the bathroom window had been left wide open (it has a tilt and turn so it was open from the top which is why I did not notice it). It must have been opened when they tidied the room and either forgotten about or whatever. There are no screens on the windows either so it was an open invitation to all the mosquitoes in the area for an all night feast. Knowing that mosquitoes are an issue (as you can see from previous reviews and I only noticed after the can of spray), I consider this unforgivable and it ruined one of our three nights.

All in all, I think there were better hotels for the money and I would not recommend this place.

I do not recommend this hotel. There is an overwhelming flow of messages via WhatsApp and on-site, and the final bill involved misleading charges. Venice offers many better options with a much stronger price-to-quality ratio, where you can relax without constant promotional pressure or the risk of being misled.

Have a look at the answer. Avoid this unserious hotel keeper and save your time and budget for something more reasonable.

Huge disappointment. The only thing good about the place was that the room was big and the facility clean. However, my standard single bedroom did not have an ajoining toilet, I had to go downstairs to a shared/unlocked bathroom. The bed was very hard and even had buttons on top, right underneath the sheets which was really uncomfortable. Breakfast was not included and not even possible to add, which we were only told upon arrival. The hotel manager was very aggressive and stressed out all the time. There were to lamps beside the bed that were not possible to connect, they were only there for decoration, so the only light came from a dim lamp in the ceiling - only possible to turn off from next to the door. The walls were really thin so anytime anyone moved in the hallway I could hear everything. This hostel should definitely not be able to market itself as a 4 star or 9/10 facility as it does today.
