Location

Located in Onna, Okinawa, Halekulani Okinawa lies approximately a one-hour drive from Naha Airport. The resort is about 6.7 kilometers from Kanna Beach, providing guests with access to coastal scenery. Although not in the city center, the hotel offers free parking and car hire services for convenient exploration. Nearby, guests can find a convenience store and Ryukyu BBQ restaurants a short walk away. The hotel is situated on the coast, with accommodations divided between the Beach Wing and Sunset Wing, each offering different sea views and atmospheres.

Tips

  • If you prefer a quieter room, request accommodation in the Sunset Wing to avoid road noise common in the Beach Wing.
  • Bring an eye mask to block early morning light as room blinds do not fully darken the space.

This hotel is perfect for a vacation. The room's blinds have a unique design, which unfortunately means they don't block out the morning sun, so if you like to sleep in, it's best to bring an eye mask. Also, the hotel is divided into two sections: Beach Wing and Sunset Wing. We stayed in the Beach Wing this time, and while our balcony overlooked the sea, the hallway outside our door faced a road, and we could hear cars speeding by at night. You'd think the hotel is far enough from the road that the noise wouldn't be that bad. However, the room's design, with a long corridor leading from the front door to the bedroom (past the closet and bathroom), acts as a natural sound amplifier. If we stay at this hotel again, we'll probably request to be in the Sunset Wing, where the noise might be a bit less.

This hotel in Onna is about an hour's drive from Naha Airport. The rooms are simply elegant, and they leave a small gift every night during turn-down service. The hotel's restaurants are a highlight, offering high-quality Japanese and Western options, though reservations are a must. My only minor complaint is that the blinds let in a lot of light, making it hard to sleep in late. But overall, it's a fantastic hotel that I'd definitely visit again.

A very comfortable stay, with top-notch experience in terms of rooms, common areas, and service. The only regret is that the strong winds and low temperatures in February made it impossible to enjoy the water activities.

I come to Okinawa almost every winter for vacation and have stayed at many ocean-view hotels here. Halekulani Okinawa stands out for both its significant strengths and weaknesses.

**Pros:**
(1) As a newly built hotel, the facilities are much newer than other hotels. The rooms even have smart tablets to conveniently book restaurants and check out various amenities.
(2) Although the restaurant prices are noticeably higher than other hotels, the quality of both the buffet and à la carte restaurants, and even room service, is excellent and worth the price.
(3) The service is very good. If you're taking public transportation when checking out, they'll even provide a car to take you to the station.
(4) If you skip breakfast, you can change it to lunch, which is convenient for those who like to sleep in.

**Cons:**
This seems to be a common issue with Western hotel brands. Halekulani Okinawa, along with two other Hilton hotels here, shares the following problems. I believe this might stem from differences in Western brands' operational philosophies. However, for a hotel like Halekulani, which costs more than double other ocean-view hotels, these shortcomings are quite unacceptable.
(1) The hotel lacks a well-stocked convenience store and souvenir shop. Other Japanese-owned ocean-view resort hotels usually have one or two such stores with a wide variety of items. Here, there's only one shop selling some Halekulani branded merchandise and a very limited selection of "eco-friendly, natural" snacks, with hardly any beverages. If you want something to eat, you have to walk a few hundred meters outside the hotel to a chain convenience store.
(2) The mini-bar drinks in the room are chargeable, and the prices are 4-5 times higher than at outside convenience stores. Considering this hotel is 2-3 times more expensive than others, and many other hotels often offer free mini-bars, this difference is quite significant. The main issue is the lack of an internal convenience store, forcing guests to frequently go out to a convenience store a few hundred meters away for a wider selection of drinks and snacks. Not to mention, it's truly unpleasant to go out when it's rainy or windy. For someone like me who enjoys staying at a comfortable and convenient hotel for several days or even a week, it's hard to stay long if a resort can't meet all my needs in one place.
(3) The price for the self-service laundry and dryer (700/800 JPY) is also about three times higher than at other local ocean-view hotels (200/300 JPY).

While the hotel's price is more than double that of others, the convenience and comfort aren't significantly higher (aside from newer facilities). Coupled with a mini-bar and self-service laundry that are several times more expensive, and the need to go outside to buy necessities due to the lack of an on-site convenience store, it feels like they're trying too hard to squeeze every penny. It's more suitable for a short, 'check-the-box' experience rather than a prolonged, relaxing stay. The quality of the seawater is also just average compared to hotels in Onna Village and Cape Zanpa.

The hotel's facilities and services are good, and there's a convenience store and Ryukyu BBQ nearby. The only downsides are that it's quite far from the city center and the airport, and the curtains let in a lot of light.

. Halekulani Okinawa is an outstanding resort that delivers exactly what you expect from the brand: impeccable service, exceptional comfort, and a deep sense of calm.

The service is flawless—attentive, warm, and genuinely thoughtful without ever feeling intrusive. The rooms are extremely comfortable, beautifully designed, and perfectly suited for a slow, restorative stay. The surrounding nature is stunning, and the resort feels well integrated into its landscape, which adds a lot to the overall experience.

We stayed in December, and despite it being winter, the atmosphere was still incredibly pleasant and charming. The main pool does not operate in winter, but honestly, it doesn’t feel like a drawback at all—there is so much more to the property than the pool.

Breakfast deserves a special mention: it is excellent, with high-quality ingredients and great variety. I highly recommend trying breakfast in different restaurants during your stay, as each offers a slightly different experience.

Overall, Halekulani Okinawa is a refined, serene, and beautifully executed resort. A perfect choice for those who value comfort, service, and atmosphere over loud entertainment—even in the winter season.

I had an excellent stay at Halekulani Okinawa over Christmas. I stayed for 4 nights and it was excellent. The hotel itself is lovely, very clean, spacious and it was beautifully decorated for Christmas! The staff were all excellent (particularly at the morning buffet - first morning I was there I had reordered a few cups of tea, one member of staff remembered and the next day offered me a pot instead!) The little details are what makes a trip special. The activities available were also great, yoga in the morning was free and I enjoyed marine activities too. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a few days to relax and enjoy!

Amazing experience at Halekulani Okinawa. The resort is stunning, peaceful, and beautifully maintained. The rooms are spacious with a luxurious feel, offering breathtaking ocean views and thoughtful touches everywhere.

Dining was another highlight. The breakfast selection was excellent, and every meal was delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented.

I would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a luxurious and memorable getaway in Okinawa. I can’t wait to return!
