Weligama Ocean Breeze in Weligama

The hotel is overpriced, it smells like sewage and the services are so incredibly bad. The room is NOT deluxe!!! Bad

I booked this hotel based on positive reviews and I was very disappointed. I had upgraded prior to arrival having read about inconsistent WiFi unless in deluxe rooms. I would not describe my room as deluxe at all compared to any other places I have stayed in in Sri Lanka for a lot less money per night. The room was dated, there were no tea making facilities (despite the listing saying a kettle) the mini bar was expensive. There was an overpowering strong smell in my room, I don’t know what it was but it gave me a headache, it may have been what they used to clean as other areas had the same smell but better ventilation. My shower would not stay fixed, the WiFi did not work well at all, there was no soundproofing and some guests were very loud. I was booked for 4 nights but stayed only one. I actually found somewhere significantly more luxurious for a lot less. The staff seemed confused I would want to leave, nevertheless they assisted me well and were very polite and helpful. The breakfast was nice and there is good choice, although would be nice to have a fruit plate and juice not either/or. The pool area is nice but small. It is on the main road which my room faced, it is difficult to cross safely to the beach. There is a 3% additional charge for paying by card which is not advertised in advance and payment is made upfront (I had paid before I even saw my room).

The photos indicated a charming rustique, but the reality yielded shabby - and non of the chic. The roof timbers suggest authentic historical building but up close they support corrugated steel painted in red, rather than terracotta roof tiles. The garden is scattered with litter and the swings are out of use. My daughter complained of the taste of the pool water. The rooms were fitted with the most basic furnishings and the general feel of the hotel was a two-star photoshopping (and pricing) itself as a four star online. Perfectly good for half the price, but poor value for money compare to what else is available in Welligama. A real shame, as a little effort could go a long way here. Some hotel know-how is very much needed in order to save this tired, overpriced cheap stay into the authentic villa that its location deserves. Better off to book ahead for the W15 or similarly priced options - much more deserving of this price ranged .
