Decent sushi bar. Service totally consistent with a buffet. A quiet place for a private lunch or dinner.
Rubio's was one of the first dilettante restaurants, where they focused on making original Mexican fish tacos and at least four decades later, Rubio's has become an icon in regards to "real fish tacos."
I used to stop in San Quentin - on my way to surf a secret lefthander down in Baja Norte - and the small Mexican motel that I stayed at, served me some really awesome abalone, lobster and fish taco's. They also used to sell them at some of Tijuana's roadside taco stands and they became very popular in Ensenada too.
I haven't been south of our border since 2001, as foreigners have been warned to stay away, due to warring narcotic cartels, robberies and even kidnappings.It's a sad story for such a beautiful country and such nice people. I wish that I had the money to visit Mexico's ancient archeological sites.
I really loved the "homemade battered cod taco's that Rubio's created however, over the years, the types of fish have changed : Most copycats use tilapia - a small flat, perch-like ocean fish that is extremely plentiful and cheap to process. I don't particularly care for this brand of fish however - over many decades the prices of most "prime fish types," such as REAL RED SNAPPER, halibut, wild caught salmon, flounder, codfish, white sea bass and other now federally controlled "over fished species," have soared right through the roof! In fact, some are more expensive per pound, that the best meats.
The fish tacos at the new millennial android generation's Rubio's Coastal Grill are still very good and their "Tuesdays San Diego's go out to eat specials" should still be a good deal for anyone?
I stopped by Rubio's about two weeks ago and had three of their fish tacos and a small drink ; it set me back by about $12, which is normal in today's new world. It was very busy - which was detrimental in my case - as I don't care for crowded eateries ; my experience has taught me that - unless I know someone there, that the food is often of lesser quality, because the crew feels "hurried"; people who have to wait a while for their food are often quick to complain about something innocuous.
I thought that my food was quite good, regardless of the crowds and the service was also excellent too. As I'm handicapped, someone also brought my order to my table, which was very nice of them ;
as some places still don't seem to care.
Overall, my experience was pleasing however, maybe I'll return some Tuesday - in the early afternoon ; probably before the new year comes forth.
Won't return to this location solely because of the service.
