Our first staff member was super friendly / but unfortunately, our stay went downhill quickly. The first room we were given had a large wet spot on the carpet right next to the bed, which we discovered with our bare feet (ew). We went to the front desk to request a new room. The (different) staff member was not apologetic and instead asked, “Well, did you sit on the bed already?”—which felt irrelevant given the soaking wet floor.
She did give us another room, but then this 2nd room smelled strongly of cigarettes. We went back downstairs again. Still no apology, and it felt like we were inconveniencing her. She did give us a 3rd room though, and it was much better.

I know hotel rooms are not going to be perfect and I understand that- but these issues were hard to ignore 😭

We had booked this hotel specifically for the heated pool, only to find it barely warm at best - so we didn’t even get to use it.

After checkout, we were also hit with an unexpected extra charge on our card, which no one explained to us at the front desk.

And to top it off, I am now being spam emailed daily by this hotel with “check-in instructions,” sometimes in different languages, even though our stay is long over.

this place may look nice from the outside—but beware - inside it may be wet and smelly and you may get an extra charge.

THEFT AND UNSAFE LOCATION DOWNTOWN

First off, some plus sides:
- Good rating restaurant on the first floor
- Easy check-in for me at 10pm
- As a part of Marriot selections, this hotel is trying its best.

Now the down sides are:
- Lots of homeless people at the door, which makes me feel unsafe as a girl.
- Park across the hotel overnight for half price off compared to the hotel valet parking.
- Moreover, we ended up losing 700usd cash after coming back from Seaworld. The pocket inside my backpack was hanging out, showing the remaining $300, as it was initially $1000 in there. Either I was careless or the staff training needs to be taken more seriously.

This was end of 2025 but I feel the need to speak up now, as other guests should be careful of their valuable belongings.

Enjoyed our stay at this beautiful boutique hotel in down town San Diego. Comfortable stylish rooms. Big bathroom, great beds, loved the robes! Warm welcome from Susi! Convent to Balboa Theater, House of Blues, restaurants and attractions. Cool roof pool. Good cafe with delicious food and drink and excellent service by Bradley. Friendly valets.

The location was good and the rooms were very nice although a bit smaller than one would expect. The hotel fell short for business travelers not having any coffee in the room. And the view was mainly of parking lots.

Overall, a decent hotel, but there are better with a view and in similar locations

For a place to rest your head, it had a little more personality than your average, and the staff were all friendly. For the price, though, I was a little underwhelmed. Awkward mix of lighting temperatures in the room, the bathroom had a barn door, front desk was jammed into a corner of a very loud lobby, and f&b was really disappointing. I was glad for the $20 dining credit that was part of the destination fee, but beware that room service is served “takeout style” — so that meant I paid $37 (incl fees, before the credit) for two mediocre fish tacos to be delivered in a plastic box with disposable cutlery. Barista coffee the next morning was so bad I almost returned it. Marriott’s got an opportunity to make a good hotel better; I hope they take it.

This hotel has a lot of potential, but we had an overall disappointing experience. We booked our stay through Chase Edit, and the lady at check-in was confused about the benefits. She said since the reservation was pre-paid we weren't eligible for any benefits or upgrades through my Bonvoy Titanium status. After going back and forth she did said she could do a one-category upgrade since we booked through Chase. Our "upgraded" room was on the 2nd floor and overlooked an AC unit (photos below). On the 2nd night I did pay extra to upgrade to a room on a higher floor and the view was worth it. At check-out I was told I couldn't use my $100 property credit for a room upgrade and that it was only for the bar and restaurant. The breakfast options at hotel restaurant were good, however they were understaffed and breakfast for 2 took over an hour, and we ordered right away. I liked the pool area all the communal spots up there. The immediate area of the hotel isn't great, but it's close to Gas Lamp and has easy access to most of SD with trolly stop on the same block.

This hotel is fantastic! I loved everything about it. The finishes are beautiful and modern, the lobby is chill and inviting, the rooms are well appointed and up to date. Very nice cafe and bar in the lobby. Rooftop pool and deck area is lovely and large. So spacious. I will definitely prefer this hotel every time I'm back in San Diego.

Super pet friendly, amazing service, $20 daily credit to room is a nice touch!

Very friendly staff! We enjoyed our room and view. Modern, clean, and great service. Only caveats - slippery floor, rolling down blinds takes long, limited streaming ability, no shower door. Small things though. Overall great experience!

We had a great stay at Alma San Diego Downtown! The location is perfect—right in the heart of downtown and within walking distance of so many restaurants, shops, and attractions. The hotel itself has a stylish, modern vibe and felt clean and welcoming from the moment we arrived.

The staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive throughout our stay, which really made a difference. Our room was comfortable, well-designed, and quiet, making it easy to relax after a long day out. We also appreciated the thoughtful details and overall atmosphere of the hotel.

Overall, Alma San Diego Downtown was a wonderful place to stay, and we would absolutely consider coming back the next time we’re in San Diego. Highly recommend!

Wonderful food, I had gumbo and an elegant tomato cucumber salad. My husband had a cobb salad with smoked chicken. Fabulous !good service and live music in a very uplifting atmosphere.

Great venue!!! Have a great time and memorable experience each time I come here...
The wait on the lines can be bothersome, but there's always something great to look forward to once you're
inside!!!

Great venue in downtown San Diego. I've been to concerts, parties and fashion shows here. It's versatile for many occasions, although sometimes the acoustics are hard to deal with or maybe the sound guy doesn't always get it right.

Nice, quaint place to kick back and/or rock out, in my and my kids case! We went there to see the band Issues, as well as the 3 other bands playing that night! It was super fun and memorable! I'd go there again.
21.10.2017 Tim
Saw Mastadon opened by Eagles if Death Metal & Russian Circles. The venue was really superb. It had a lot of character and things to look at. Many different places to get a variety of Libations. All this was just within the concert area. There's a separate restaurant and store attached and it's just a really truly amazing place!

I have been to Cafe 21 twice and I had a blast both times. The first time we went in because we heard Frank Sinatra music ? one Friday evening. I had to really great drinks and danced with my honey.
We had brunch today, and the food was next level good. We had the shirt-rib Iron skillet. It was an omelet in a cast iron pan as the "bowl" with cheese, shrot- ribs and sweet peppers on top. The egg was fluffy and delicious on the inside, while the outside had a crust that made it look like it was in a pie crust. The shirt-ribs were so good. They practically melted in my mouth while the outside had a beautiful little crunch to it. The peppers were perfectly cooked and a little crunchy. The cucumber mimosa was different. Certainly a drink to be sipped.
Cafe 21 seems to take pride in putting an original touch on everything including their servers. Thank you Alexis, we had a wonderful brunch.

Unfortunately I agree with the other negative reviews on here; the food is overpriced for the portions and everything lacks major seasoning or flavor. I usually don't mind when there is no salt and pepper shakers on the table, but I could have definitely used them for my $80 meal(one appetizer, SHARED ONE entree for two people and no dessert). My boyfriend swears there was no alcohol put in our drinks. We only ordered a small pitcher of sangria. Our service was decent but could have been a lot better for the price. The band playing that night wasn't very good... I gave two stars for sake of the decor. I really like decor.
21.11.2017 Melody
Enchanting and delicious restaurant with great service and ecletic ambiance! If you're looking for unique twists and farm to table, this is the place. Their drink menu has everything from a chocolate lovers delight to a ginger & citrus gin fruit cocktail. I enjoyed their Curry Scallops and Truffle Crepe Cake. I was also treated to a live, jazz band on a Wednesday night -- fantastic evening!

In A Nutshell:

-Cafe 21 is "natural" American breakfast restaurant.
-Natural meaning that they use high-quality ingredients.
-Get their seasonal mimosa's especially the raspberry flavor.
-Try their short-rib omelet, which is served on a very hot iron skillet along w/ huge chunks of tender beef, bell peppers, caramelized onions & blue cheese.
-For your free side, I recommend their potato galette, which is a delicious thinly sliced/layered chunk of potato.

Overall, the decor is very nice & the service prompt. Worth coming to share a meal here.

Very calm mall, which is good! Nice atmosphere, no random people walking around. Good stores too. The bathrooms are very clean and so are the food courts. Love the decorations too, love the huge chess game. The levels are a bit confusing, but they do have maps all around (:

I love this place! Every time I go back to San Diego I visit Horton Plaza. It's has great shopping, good food and lots of fun things to do! Plus you are in downtown San Diego which is awesome in its own right. You can park and spend hours there.. I'm not sure if it's still there but there is an amazing noodle spot at Horton Plaza. Highly recommend!
04.01.2018 Bradley
This Westfield Horton Plaza s the only shopping center anywhere near downtown San Diego. The only reason this Plaza gets four stars instead of two is because of the Macy's. I spend many days in San Diego and this Macy's is the only place to shop for whatever you need while downtown....yes I do forget pack some things and need to do a quick shopping run from time to time. If you are in town for tourism or business the Macy's is your shopping savior.

The plaza itself is very nicely remolded and is adjacent to the Westin and across the street from the U.S. Grant Hotel. The plaza also has a movie theater.
30.12.2017 Thom
Very nice hotel with an attentive staff. Room was great, heated outdoor pool and hot tub were wonderful after a nice day of sit-seeing. The restaurant, however, left a lot to be desired. It does not meet the quality of the hotel itself. Food was overpriced and less than tasty. Sirloin steak was mostly fat, veggies were crawling in spice and salt, but soup as actually a bit better than what one can heat up from a can. My advice: stay in this lovely, well situated, comfortable hotel, but eat in any of the excellent nearby restaurants and don't eat at the hotel.
16.12.2017 Cheryl
Horton Plaza is the heart of Downtown San Diego with some stores and restaurants. This is one less busy shopping mall with a nearby hotels in the area. Now with the Horton Plaza Park, it enhances and beautifies the area. It is great for locals and tourists for shopping, entertainment, and fun. It has been troublesome in the mall and park with the homeless.
