Hotel Oberschmied in Reit im Winkl

This year our annual roadtrip took us to Reit Im Winkl. Drawn by its famous “Dark Sky” area just 15 min drive from the village, we booked 3 nights. Without any possibility of a refund. And honestly: If we had the option to cancel without losing any money, we would have done so, as the weather forecast soared and the prognosis of rain became more and more certain. But as this was not an option we took the decision to make the best of it and we are truly happy that we got to stay here and get to know this little pearl.

Check-in
Check-in was easy and even though the reception is not manned at all times, it was very easy to get in contact with the hosts. And we use the word “hosts” very deliberately. The welcome was warm and we truly felt like guests in someone’s home from the get-go.

Parking
Parking is super easy and we had a parking card + a visitors card offering free parking in most parking areas in the village as well as discounts and free entrance to a number of places.

The room
The room was actually an apartment in two floors with the bedroom on the second floor just under the roof. We had a huge balcony safely guarded from rain by the huge roof overhangs commonly found on buildings here. The apartment had a well equipped kitchen with dish washer and fridge/freezer. There was a well assorted mini bar as well.

Logistics worked amazing in the room. As we travel with a lot of luggage ready for every sort of activity and weather we meet on our road trips, it is super important to us to have enough space to store suitcases, shoes etc. This place has an abondance of storage and corners to tuck away empty bags.

The restaurant
We dined in the restaurant all nights, and we must say that it was excellent. From the beyond tender brisket, to the rib eye, we had some great meals in this place, again with the feeling of being a guest as our host came to welcome us personally, giving us the history of this place, dating back to the 1400’s. As we returned the following nights, we got a somewhat familiar relation to the waiters, who where competent, efficient and very nice.

The restaurant is not inside the hotel and a lot of locals seems to dine there as well and it is very lively with a good buzz.

The vibe
The hotel is charmingly decorated with lots of quirky nick-nack, which could have been kitsch, but actually just added to the charm.. A candy bar next to reception was free to use for all guests.

We are big fans of cats, so it is a plus that there is a cat roaming the hallways. It tends to stay in the private area, so non-cat lovers will not be bothered and we estimate the chance of allergy to be minimal.

Overall rating
If you are looking for a place in the Alps with the possibility of hiking and village life combined with great accommodation and dining, we highly recommend this little pearl of a hotel. We have rarely felt so welcome, and there is an intangible charm to the place. We rarely feel like going back to hotels, but here we can honestly say, that should another roadtrip bring us to this area, we will not hesitate to book another stay here.

We have traveled extensively in Europe and have found this place and area to be one of the best. The room avd veranda have everything you might want or need. The connected restaurant was cozy and exquisite food. The value and quality are not to be missed!,,,

One of the best restaurants that I have visited. The service is impeccable, the interior is amazing and cozy, the music was great (mostly calming jazz and swing). The food was delicious. Beautifully served, great and novel combination of quality ingredients and big portions on top of everything.

Beautiful hotel in the middle of town. We stayed in one of the apartments, which was simple but very comfortable. The staff was incredibly accommodating and made sure we felt at home. A wonderful continental breakfast topped it all off.

Gorgeous cozy hotel with surprisingly large rooms. Visited during Feb 2018 and the place was beautiful and warm against the snowy exterior. Great restaurant on site too.

Hotel in the center of Reit Im Winkl right behind the beautiful church in perfect Bavarian style. The staff is friendly and helpful. Breakfast is complete, continental, rooms are clean and comfortable. Recommended
