Location

Hótel Vellir is situated in Hafnarfjordur on Tjarnarvellir 3, along the highway connecting Reykjavik and Reykjavik Domestic Airport (RKV), which is 9 km away. The hotel is about a 20-25 minute drive from the center of Reykjavik, though advertised as 15 minutes by the front desk. Nearby, guests will find a few restaurants and bars within a 5-minute drive. The Icelandic Museum of Design and Applied Art is located 4.7 km from the hotel. For beach access, Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach lies 7.8 km away. Two bus stops adjacent to the hotel provide economical public transport options to Reykjavik. The location offers ample free parking, making it convenient for those renting a car.

Tips

  • Plan to use a car or local buses for convenient access to Reykjavik, as public transport stops are right next to the hotel but the location is not within walking distance of downtown.
  • Bring your own tea or coffee supplies since the hotel does not provide in-room facilities for these.
  • Consider requesting a room with north-facing windows for better views and quieter surroundings, as some suites at the back have less desirable views.

Great location between the airport and Reykjavik, very convenient at that level to easily manage travel time between both places.
The self check-in experience, even outside of regular hours, was perfect, and contacting the staff via message to schedule everything was very simple and efficient.
Spacious and very clean rooms, it's a shame about the poor soundproofing between rooms, which would have made the experience even better.

The only downside was the breakfast, which is very limited and the quality of some products wasn't the best (completely watered-down juices, bad coffee...).

Even so, I would easily recommend a stay here, mainly because of the convenient location.

Slept here the first night after arriving. Location between the airport and Reykjavik is great. Although the hotel is situated on a kind of business area, there are restaurants and bars nearby within a 5 min. drive.

The hotel view is perfect. I will say this is a good place for viewing northern light!

Well built and decorated. Very clean, the rooms are warm and comfortable. The one thing I don't like is the breakfast, which is completely cold and quite low end in comparison.

So this is not close to downtown Reykjavík. By bus it is 45 minutes away by care 20-25 online and at the front desk it is advertised as 15 minutes. The hotel breakfast was beyond basic but overall poor quality. The juice machine was giving watery juice and there were flies around. Nothing tasted fresh but rather made the day before. The rooms are cheaply furnished like dorm room furniture and the black out curtains aren’t long enough to be funny black out but the building is mostly glass so it makes me think it must have been an office before. I went to three different hotels in Iceland and this was the worst but prices similar so I’m disappointed. The front desk personally were nice but not there often. I wouldn’t come back and I wouldn’t recommend this hotel. Pictures are much nicer online.

Husband and I stayed here for 2 nights before a cruise. Convenient spot for everything we were looking to do in iceland as a "home base". Breakfast was included and delicious. Very nice staff. Clean rooms. Very happy with our stay and highly recommend!

The staff were very accommodating, friendly, and quick to respond to our inquiries. The breakfast was great! The hotel is right next to two bus stops which was a super convenient economic way of traveling to the capital. The hotel is also really close to three grocery stores and a lovely local hiking trail (behind soccer field). The room was a 4/5 only because the shower drainage did not work well and the TV services would sometimes lose signal. Otherwise, this was a great stay!

Decent place for a decent price, but one thing I really dislike is that they don't allow guests to fill up coffee or even hot water for our own bottles. All of the other hotels I stayed in Iceland don't care about this. I won't stay at this hotel again.
