Before I get into the good bad and UGLY let me say that if you are seeking privacy and a resort stay in Ubud, pay a little more and go to Komenaka! I say this from my own experience and wished i had done the same.

The good
1. Infinity pool with our room
2. Nature and view

The bad (oh where do I begin! A lot to do with comparison with other places we've stayed in Bali)
1. Lack of preparation - according to them the honeymoon prep is the swans with our bath towels! While in other places roses were a minimum. As per our request alcohol was not removed from the room. There were no bath or hand towels as they expected us to use the ones someone wrapped them into swans on our bed! Towels and bed sheets have stains on them! There were no facial tissues on arrival in the room. The person showing us the room couldn't find the mini bar price list! Did not know how to turn on lights in the room! The bathroom door to the outdoor pool deck was open leaving insects to come into the room.
2. Lack of personalizarion. Although they have only 10 private villas but the reception has no way of knowing who is calling them and they would ask each time which room number while in other places they would know you by name!Despite asking us to fill our allergens at check in (we asked for halal and no alcohol or bacon) we were still provided bacon on our eggs the first day!
3. Toilet seat was filthy - had to ask them to get cleaned
4. Hot water heater turned off automatically and no one bothered to turn it on until we had to ask aftet freezing from the pool!

The Ugly
Although we were told room #1 was bigger than most rooms, it's located under the dining area hence noise and disturbance from guests and staff moving around upstairs is a price to pay. The door has direct access to the passage way to other villas or kitchen area and such more noise. The door itself has an old style locking system and that along with then entire place of wood cracks making more sounds. Poor sleep and overall poor experience. I highly recommend NOT to select this place if you are seeking a good private romantic place to spend your vacation / honeymoon.

I’ve reviewed Black Penny before and I’ll continue doing so because it is my favorite in Ubud. I’ve stayed at several villas/hotels in Bali/Ubid over the last 15 years or so and Black Penny is my favorite for several reasons. 1. The private infinity pools overlooking the rainforest and river is so peaceful and beautiful. 2. The staff is impeccable and so sweet. 3. Love the bathtub and bed! 4. Great breakfast. 5. Fantastic view from restaurant. 6. There aren’t that many villas so even when full it seems so private and quiet. I’ll always come back here as much as I can!

The best Villas ever, calmness, respect, privacy, comfrot, facilities, the design of the villas and style, views, everything is so perfect cannot be better. the only thing is that food quantity in breakfast is not so big but it was so fresh and tasted amazing. Thank you Black Penny.

The hotel view is amazing, facing the rice field. Stayed here for 3 nights… hotel staffs are helpful and friendly. Breakfast selection is great. I did read some of the bad reviews from trip advisor. I think the management did changed the team. They are super professional now. The toilet is located outside the room so do expect to see ants and insects. As for the room, there are some wear and tear. Overall, still recommend staying in black penny.

Very pleasant stay! The food and breakfast was really good, the room is clean and have everything needed. We loved the pool and the view it oversees. The only downside is the bathroom, the lighting is very weak, even in the morning it’s very dark as sunlight doesn’t reach in. It’s connected to the outdoor but that’s common in Bali. Good location and they have shuttles provided to go in to Ubud centre.
