San Michele Procida in Procida Island

A boutique hotel that needs care and attention to retain its 4-star status.

This hotel holds a special place in my heart, as I got engaged there, but I am sad to write, this hotel needs some self-love. And it needs it fast.

The location of San Michele is fantastic, unrivalled. It is a beautiful location to wake up in, the views from the balcony are enhanting, and the restaurant on the dock by the boats is magical.

The minimalist white walls, natural fibres, and casual costal style is chic, but now feels a little tired. The walls are no longer freshly white, the sofa in our room was stained, and the wooden weave chairs are fraying with old age. In addition, the bathroom felt dated, the soap dispenser and toilet seat were broken, and a damp smell persisted. We raised this at the front desk.

The service is ok. It is not 4 star service. It all feels very transctional. On returning to the hotel this year on our honeymoon, after getting engaged there last year, we expected a bit of a fuss. The restaurant staff remembered us (and my proposal) and were very sweet, but the hotel made no mention of it, which was a shame.

In summary, I still have a big soft spot for this hotel and I want to come back, however it needs to get back to its best again.

This constructive review comes from a place of care for the hotel. As after staying at the amazing but only 3-star (it should be 4-star minimum) Il Monasterio in Ischia i think San Michele needs to be careful not to lose its 4-star status, as location and personal history alone may not be enough to get us back.
