Reviews
The hotel maintenance needs some improvement, there was electrical tape around one of the taps in the washroom of our room and the washroom bench was in a poor state. There were many instances of wallpaper either peeling off or having been taken off. You only get two 500ml bottles of water, if you request more you need to pay. Interestingly, in the reception lounge, there is a sake and wine dispenser, along with a bean to cup coffee machine that is all unlimited use.
The locals were very friendly and polite. Most importantly, the trails around Yamanaka were incredibly beautiful. We are planning on returning for the 2026 Kaga Spa UTMB.
For Japanese standards the service was just ok. Much nicer greeting upon arrival. Was left to drag my suitcases out the door with a wonderful old lady trying to help me. Of course I could not allow her to lift the heavy bags. All the other people were not available to help or see me out. Extremely rude by Japanese standards. Coffee at breakfast I was told to get at the coffee machine. Substandard for the class of hotel.
1. The hotel was under renovation during my stay, and there was no prior notice. The view from the hotel’s living area was completely blocked, and the worst part is that there was no compensation offered for the inconvenience.
2. I originally booked a standard room but emailed the hotel to request an upgrade to a room with a private onsen. However, they charged me extra for the last-minute change, so I had to pay a little more.
On a positive note, the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. What frustrated me most was the lack of prior notice about the renovation and no discount or compensation, yet they charged extra for a last-minute room change.
Open-air (large public bath) hot spring bath - no view, disappointing.
The photos they post made this hotel look stunning but in actuality everywhere you looked where signs of age and serious disrepair. Peeling wallpaper, stained ceilings with water damage, marks and scratches on walls. The Kaisakei dinner was not great either. The outdoor onsen was nice. This hotel needs a serious makeover.
We very much enjoyed the 109F hot spring fed stone tub on our balcony overlooking the rushing river. The included carefully prepared breakfast and dinner tasting menus, served in our own private dining room, were unique and novel to us. We did not enjoy every new texture and taste but absolutely enjoyed the experience.
The public baths are nice and offer free ice cream afterwards.
Not much is available in the immediate surroundings but a quick shuttle drive into town offered shops and lunch. We walked back to the inn after the rain stopped.
Quiet, calm, relaxing. Free drinks and snacks in the lobby each afternoon. The service was so welcoming and hospitable. I want to go back!
I wrote some haikus during my stay:
Constant water flows.
Enjoy what chef has prepared.
Now soak and relax.
Forty Eight Point Two
In Celcius, that is hot!
Must get in slowly.
Rice garden lobby.
Tatami feels nice on feet.
Ready to relax.
Only robes and socks.
Big change from the big city.
Love peace and quiet.
