This onsen is not tattoo-friendly. I called on the phone to ask and they confirmed that tattoos are not allowed. If you have a tattoo and want to soak in Takayama, I recommend you go instead to Takanoyu, where they will welcome your tattoos!

The worst hotel I’ve stayed at in all my visits to Japan. The room was tiny and dirty, with shared toilets, and kids’ arcade games playing annoying music all the time, except between 12 AM and 6 AM, right behind the room door. The linens were dirty, so we had to sleep in our clothes and use our jackets as pillows. No bed or tatami — just dirty mattresses on the floor. This might pass for a youth hostel, but $100 is not a hostel price. The hotel is also far from the city center, and the public bus runs only once every two hours. The only good thing is the free shuttle, but it’s also infrequent.
The so-called onsen is just a big public bath with chlorinated water and requires an extra fee of 900 JPY — horribly overpriced. Definitely not recommended.

I wish I could put less than a star! I usually never complain, but this place os a real scam! The onsen as the dormitory as the staff (except the female staff at reception and restaurant) were just awful 😞 please don't put yourself in disgrace going there, it is the most dirty place I have been in Japan and even in other country! One last word: disgusting!

We all slept together in a dormitory, and the person sleeping next to me snored so loudly that I could barely sleep...
I won't be using this hotel again.

I’ve stayed in some very cheap and dodgy hostels in my time. This one takes the cake. It is a bath house for locals, which is fine. Accommodation is the poorest of the poor. Don’t stay here unless you have no choice. Could only do one night out of pure desperation.

It was bit out of the Takayama city center but they offer free shuttle bus services. Please refer to Google map review for shuttle bus time table or go to the Washington Hotel and inquire about the shuttle bus time table, which right in front of Takayama Train station where the shuttle bus pick up drop off location to & from the hostel.

It’s an old school authentic Japanese onsen specially designed for local people. It’s perfect if you are up for a real deal Japanese onsen experience. It’s no fancy hostel with English speaking host or receptionist, don’t expect to meet too many backpacks or tourist as well.

If you are here just because you can’t find a cheap hostel than you are up for a culture shock of your life… please go there with open heart & open mind… you might love it like myself & Elza did. … and we miss it a lot. It was true Japanese onsen experience.
