Hirayunomori Hotel

My go-to hot springs in town! I'm from Takayama and this is the first place I take all of my American friends. I look forward to visiting during the winter months.

Absolutely some of the best rotenburo (outdoor hot springs) I've experienced, and I've been to MANY in Japan in various parts of the country over the years. The water, as with all the local hot springs, is very good free-flowing genuine hot springs water. There are many pools of varying temperatures depending on what you're in the mood for.

The baths are quite well-maintained and clean. Don't be fooled (as some other reviewers unfamiliar with hot springs were) by the 湯の花, yu no hana, the natural mineral threads and flakes found in abundance in the water. It's proof of the quality of the springs and is highly prized by onsen fans. You can even buy dried packets of it from the souvenir shops! I'll post a picture from one of the hand-washing basins in town to show you what it looks like.

Watching the snow fall gently around you soaking in one of these rock-lined pools is a bucket list item for sure. The design of the pools and surroundings is quite nicely done.

I also recommend refreshing yourself with some of the local fruit milk for sale in the vending machines in the rest area. Bottled milk after a bath is a Japanese tradition, and the Hida region is known for its beef and milk products. I always try whatever fruit milk is available and the ones in Gifu are five stars! The orange milk drink tastes like a Creamsicle and is tasty, but the pineapple milk is the best in my opinion!

I came here each day that I stayed in town. I'll definitely be back!

Had an amazing time, the outside onsen is very nice, there are about 10 outside pools and two inside (women side). Super happy they allowed me in with tattoos. The water in the hot pools are very "natural", there is a smell of sulfur. This place also has a great restaurant. Overall I had a great, relaxing timed and would love to come back.

Large onsen facility with many different pools of varying temperature, very popular amongst the locals. Entry pricing is very reasonable though bring your own towel to avoid having to buy one there. There is a restaurant as well with pretty decent food as well.

The hot spring is pretty relaxing, but I had hoped for a bit more variety between the baths - they are pretty much all the same temperature. The volcanic water smells strongly of sulphur and has white strings floating in it, so don't expect just normal hot water! There is a (gas-warmed) sauna available, which is a nice addition.
I was happily surprised by the restaurant. They have a good variety of meals that fits any budget.

Il complesso è completo di tutto, terme all'aperto e al coperto, ristorante nella foresta, zona riposo e anche un minimarket, il tutto collegato da suggestivi corridoi tra gli alberi. A due passi dalla stazione degli autobus.

This place was a gem! Family of four including a couple of boys (4 and 6) and we all found pools we could lounge in. Family cabins very comfy for us.

A very nice onsen experience. Clean, nice changing room, good choice of outside pools.
