Reviews
The rooms had wonderful decor and presence, no noise at the designated "lights out" time, no complaints! If you're a foreigner, expect the traditional hard mattresses
Bathrooms were clean, supplied nicely, and the wait times for availability were never long!
As a foreigner, navigating might be difficult in the winter. The 20 minute walking path to the train likely being snowed in-- but the landlady would always phone a cab for us. I would love to visit again someday!
Comfortable sleep areas. Can get hot in the summers afternoon upstairs.
I booked 3 nights as a cheap getaway from overcrowded Sapporo. The hostel was at Matsuura Station 2 stops from Abashiri station, and 20 minute walk with carry-on suitcase 10kg. Ideal for youth hostel with the charm of home-stay, maybe not best depending on age, mobility, transport method (if you have difficulty I’d suggest somewhere else) the final walk down the driveway/entrance is dirt/rock path. Many bikers but I brought ear plugs and didn’t wake up when they left before me. Everyone seem to go to sleep early at 10 or earlier so no noise issues.
First day I dropped off luggage at check-in because another review said dark roads and signing up for shower. I went into town for food and saw a local festival. The next day I stayed in to do reading and writing. I added one more night to do a day trip to Kushiro and caught the last train back (not many trains in Hokkaido so be careful). Walking back in the dark with one street lamp and cellphone light was a blessing because it was a new moon with sky full of star and shooting stars. Spent the night taking pictures. Mama-San and Papa-San were very kind and helpful host. They had lamps, sitting pads to borrow to stargaze.
Advice:
1. Sign up for shower upon check-in.
2. Bring food to cook in kitchen.
3. If there is clear skies go out at night.

Although I stayed for quite a long time, I am a very lazy person and am not good at relationships with people, so the process of getting to know the owner of the accommodation was not that smooth, but despite this, I was able to slowly continue the conversation as if he warmly adjusted to my pace.
On the day I left the accommodation, I felt quite relieved and talked about various things. I could feel that I had become so attached to the place and people that I felt so sorry for that short time.
If you want to feel the warm exterior of the accommodation, the sophisticated interior, and the beautiful outside scenery, but are hesitant due to accessibility, you don't need to worry too much because you can use the Toko Bus, which can travel most of Abashiri for 500 to 700 yen. .
