The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong – The Worst Ritz Ever: Cold Service, Questionable Hygiene, and a Terrible Experience. As a loyal Ritz-Carlton guest, my stay at the Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong was the worst, most disappointing, and least luxurious experience I've ever had at a Ritz. It was a complete disaster from start to finish, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

First, the front desk staff was incredibly cold and unhelpful. They were stingy and lacked any service consciousness. When I handed over my ID, the staff didn't even look up, reach out to take it, or offer any greeting or smile. Their attitude was aloof and perfunctory, lacking even basic politeness. When I asked if a complimentary children's breakfast could be provided since I had a child staying later, the front desk staff responded in an extremely cold tone, stating that they would only consider it after checking my membership level. There was no kindness or flexibility throughout the interaction. The service lacked warmth, and the hotel, overall, came across as incredibly stingy.

Second, the front desk staff demonstrated zero professionalism and openly misled guests. When I inquired about butler service, the front desk absurdly told me that 'Ritz doesn't have butler service, only St. Regis does,' essentially implying I should stay at a St. Regis. However, I clearly saw numerous guest reviews on Trip.com explicitly stating that the Ritz-Carlton Pudong offers butler service. The front desk was unaware of even the most basic services of their own hotel and openly misled guests, showing extremely poor professionalism and a highly perfunctory attitude.

Third, the room's hygiene details were terrible. There were other people's hairs on the bath towel. The room cleaning was very subpar. There were long black hairs from another guest on the towel hanging in the bathroom, and my hair is blonde, so it clearly wasn't mine. As a high-end hotel, encountering such hygiene issues is absolutely unacceptable.

Fourth, the room was cold and noisy, and we were repeatedly disturbed, almost catching a cold.
The first room faced the sharp corner of a building, and the view was oppressively unbearable. After changing rooms, we were given a room with a very partial side view of the Oriental Pearl Tower. The room was damp and cold, the air conditioning was noisy, and it blew cold air instead of warm. After reporting the issue, the front desk was perfunctory. Even though they knew the engineering department had already checked it, they repeatedly said they would send people up, causing constant disturbances. The front desk's statements were contradictory. Later, after being upgraded to a suite, the hotel provided a heater that was practically useless. It was still damp and cold at night, and I had to buy an electric blanket myself to barely get some sleep, almost catching a cold.

Fifth, the breakfast was perfunctory, limited in variety, and the service was inadequate. The breakfast selection was pitifully small. All the steamed buns were pre-made semi-finished products. Only wonton noodles could be cooked fresh. The tables were messy, and I had to actively call someone to clear the plates. It completely failed to meet the standards of a high-end hotel breakfast.

Eventually, unable to tolerate the damp coldness of the room, we moved to the JW Marriott. From the concierge to the front desk, the service was warm, with smiles throughout, and proactively thoughtful. They proactively informed us about check-in procedures, making us truly feel respected. The Marriott's welcome amenities were delivered to the room before check-in, ample and thoughtful. In contrast, the Ritz-Carlton waited until after guests checked in to deliver items sporadically, and the welcome fruit selection was extremely limited and perfunctory, completely lacking genuine generosity or the elegance and warmth expected of a luxury brand. Throughout our stay, they only answered questions when asked, never being proactive, thoughtful, or problem-solving. The service was cold, hygiene was questionable, professionalism was zero, and details were subpar across the board. This was the worst Ritz-Carlton I've ever stayed in, and I sincerely do not recommend it.

The hygiene and service were excellent! They even gave my child two free breakfasts, which was a very kind gesture. The breakfast was plentiful and the view from the window was unique. Plus, it's really close to all the attractions.

First off, the service was excellent! The front desk lady (I think her name was Ashin) was really enthusiastic and professional. I highly recommend the Bund River View room! The view is absolutely stunning!! Although it's a bit older, it's very clean. And the fried dumplings at breakfast were delicious!!! The breakfast overall had a Western focus.

The room was a bit small, and changing elevators was a bit inconvenient. However, the afternoon tea was exquisite, and the view was absolutely stunning. It was quite crowded during the Spring Festival, and the check-in process could definitely be faster.

The facilities are really well-maintained. If you're looking to avoid the crowded Bund, this place is an excellent choice. The views are superb, and getting around is very convenient. The service is top-notch; they're attentive to guest needs but also maintain a respectful distance, without being intrusive. I'm very satisfied.

Stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Pudong for a night during the Chinese New Year. Even though I usually prefer newer hotels, the Ritz's unique charm convinced me.

The check-in process was a pleasant surprise. The Ritz-Carlton staff always impresses me with their professionalism and efficiency, and Jennie was no exception. The process was seamless. I had booked a Bund river view room, and Jennie explained that due to the high volume of guests during the New Year, room cleaning was taking longer. As it was already evening, she kindly upgraded me directly to a Pearl Bund river view suite without any wait. The view from this suite is among the best in the hotel, and my impression of the hotel instantly skyrocketed.

The room was incredibly spacious, and the stunning views of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Bund go without saying. The suite's amenities were immaculate and refined, featuring smart bathroom fixtures, with virtually no signs of age (a noticeable difference from standard rooms I've stayed in before). The bedding was perfectly comfortable, ensuring a great night's sleep.

Breakfast is definitely a highlight at the Ritz. The variety was extensive, and the ingredients were fresh. The salmon melted in my mouth, and the brie was perfectly soft, unlike the half-hard texture often found in other hotels. I loved the mango pudding, paired with an Americano and the beautiful scenery outside the window, making for a truly satisfying morning.

Check-out coincided with peak guest traffic. While waiting, a foreign staff member approached me and completed the check-out process in fluent Chinese, thoughtfully reminding me about storing my belongings.

Efficient and considerate, elegant and luxurious – the Ritz-Carlton Pudong is definitely a worthwhile choice.

This was an incredibly satisfying stay, and I rarely write reviews. But this time, I couldn't wait to share my experience. Firstly, every staff member was incredibly enthusiastic and provided excellent service. They even wrote a handwritten card, gifted a 'God of Wealth' cake, and thoughtfully placed it in the fridge. I was truly impressed. There was also a lovely lady from Kazakhstan who spoke Mandarin beautifully. She personally showed us to our room, explained the views, and where everything was located. So considerate and kind, I was absolutely delighted!

This is an established hotel in Lujiazui, well-maintained with excellent service. They called me a day in advance and accommodated my request for an early check-in at 12 PM so my child could nap, which was fantastic! A definite thumbs-up. Our room faced the 'Three-piece Suit' (Lujiazui's iconic skyscrapers), and the light show on Shanghai Tower was beautiful.

After check-in, a foreign staff member (I forgot her name, but she was lovely) escorted us to our room and even gave my child crayons and a drawing book, which made her very happy. Before dinner at 5 PM, this wonderful staff member took us to the outdoor viewing deck on the 58th floor to enjoy the scenery. Lujiazui, the Huangpu River, and the Bund opposite, all bathed in the sunset glow, were dreamlike and poetic – truly breathtaking.

Breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes, both Chinese and Western, and the taste was superb. Enjoying a delicious breakfast while watching the Oriental Pearl Tower sparkle in the sunlight was such a joy. Even my 3-year-old said the hotel was beautiful and wants to come back again!

Stayed for just one night, and overall, the service was really good. The view was amazing; it was my first time being so close to the Oriental Pearl Tower. Breakfast was more Western-style with a wide variety of choices. The toiletries and bedding met Marriott's high standards. What sets them apart is their customizable room keys. And there was a little surprise: I only asked for one key, but the staff member specifically came to confirm if I didn't need two. We said yes, but when they delivered them to the room, there were still two, and the second one had our cartoon avatars engraved on it! They also gave us two Ritz-Carlton mascot charms. I really appreciate hotels like this that respect boundaries yet insist on providing excellent hospitality. 🥰

As a couple who has lived in Shanghai together for almost 10 years, with one of us also Shanghainese, we have been to a lot of the best places in Shanghai, and some of the more recommended places in about 20 cities in the broader nearby area. Nothing in the city or within several hours of high-speed rail compares to a stay at Ritz-Carlton Pudong. In Asia and indeed the planet, this impeccable hotel experience stands as an iconic example of old-world elegance and service. In addition, it also offers a unique view of both some of the most modern and tallest buildings and the city’s famed Bund riverside, home to a variety of art deco architectural masterpieces.

We had the incredible good fortune to start our honeymoon at the Ritz in Pudong, and this last stay was our last honeymoon treat. As always, it was a spectacular experience that we cannot recommend enough.

The most extraordinary part of the stay really is the staff, they are all world class people who go above and beyond to make the Ritz-Carlton Pudong such an exceptional institution in one of the world’s leading cities.

Sincere thanks to the whole team for making this happen, including Cherryl, who made reservation delightfully effortless, Chris who helped us to our room, and Joey and Ruby who helped in the evening.

Special and heartfelt thanks to the whole team who make the Club Lounge experience world beating:
Eddie and Junita, who both lead by example, have a deep passion for the details that create excellence, as well as being just the nicest people. They are both incredibly inspiring leaders and professionals.

Claire is generally excellent there but also was phenomenally helpful to get a bag back when it was left behind, we really apricated that.

Jeramy and Vivian also are amazing, as are Club Lounge’s chef’s Joe and Austin.

Sherry is a real star, attentive, sharp and so helpful.

Last but not least, Helen, who was the first person to greet us after we got married, and fittingly the last person to help us create personalised room key cards with our wedding photo on it, and most recently a special photo of family from our honeymoon. Those keycards are really cool keepsakes, but making them is not as simple as you might think: the image is etched into the key, not printed, so the original photo needs to be translated by AI into an image that the etching system is capable of delivering, which is really impressive. When I showed my mom who lives very far away, even she was impressed with Helen’s work.

Ordinarily we prioritise new experiences over more of the same, regardless of how comfortable and nice it is. But regardless of how hard we try, we have not been able to figure out a better way to celebrate our biggest moments than a stay at the Ritz in Pudong.

Great and quite atmosphere. It is famous for R roasted duck which is delicious and also reasonablly priced. Remeber to book duck in advance, and you can book half duck if you only have 2 persons. All dishes are good, but frankly not special considering price. RMB 88 for 6 fried dumplings, which tastes not as good as RMB 8 ones I can eat on streer stalls. Good for business lunch/dinner.

Get the duck - call or email them in advance as it requires advance planning. They do a good job on the duck.

Worth the splurge! Generally hotel restaurants are a bit too generic and over produced for our taste but Xindalu at the Hyatt on the Bund was the exception. The comprehensive menu has all the dishes you travelers might consider "Chinese" cuisine, but that's ok as they do them SO WELL! There are at least a couple of dumpling options, and lots of stir fries and other classics. The cod is one of the most delicious seafood dishes I have ever eaten, worth the price. If you want a fancy, easy, delicious meal in Shanghai this is a great option.
