Hengshan Garden Hotel in Shanghai

This is, without a doubt, the worst four-star hotel I've ever experienced in terms of service in China.

Pros: Great location.

Cons:
1. For a four-star hotel, the staff act as if they don't see guests at all. They never greet you, and there's a complete lack of basic courtesy. (Once, coming out of the elevator, I nearly bumped into a manager in a suit, and he completely ignored me).
2. The breakfast, priced at 100 RMB per person, was utterly dismal. The variety was pitifully small, and the taste was even worse.
3. The facilities are incredibly outdated. The showerhead was dripping, there was an odd smell in the room, and there was graffiti on the furniture.
4. I watched garbage near the elevator on my floor sit there for two days without being cleaned. I was speechless.

This must be a state-owned enterprise; they clearly don't worry about guest numbers. The staff here clearly don't feel the need to treat customers to a four-star standard. If you're looking for excellent service, I strongly advise you to avoid this place!

I wouldn't recommend this hotel for guests traveling by car. It's a long walk from the underground parking to the lobby, and there's no elevator. They also don't allow guests to cut through the restaurant in the central hall as a shortcut. When I asked the front desk for help, all they told me was that I had to walk and that I couldn't cross through the Shanghai Dim Sum restaurant; no one offered any actual assistance. For a hotel costing over 800 yuan, and with all my luggage, there was no solution offered. It felt like a typical state-owned enterprise – very disappointing.
