Hotel Moderno in Erice

Just returned home (I live in Sicily) from a night at the Moderno. Had little or no hot water in the shower and the room was cold (even though the tiny radiator was hot). I paid 106 Euro for the room and thought at that price the room ought not be cold and I should have hot water. The desk clerk said she was sorry but refused my request for a discount. Finally, after much haggling (in Italian), she agreed to a 10 Euro discount (big deal). Definitely would not recommend this place. In fact, I don't recommend staying in Erice at all. The town is not to be missed, but the sidewalks definitely get rolled up after dark. There is not much choice when it comes to restaurants and hotels.....I'm not even sure all those houses are inhabitated because no one was on the street....very unusual for Sicily. Definitely take a long day trip because the ancient structures and views are incredibly memorable (you can see everything in about 4 hours) but spend your hotel money elsewhere.

The one stop on our Sicily vacation that we would not recommend is Erice and The Moderno Hotel. Erice is a very old hill town with great vistas - but these abound in Sicily. Erice was a little too touristy for us. And it is kind of out of the way vis-a-vis other more interesting and beautiful parts of Sicily. The Moderno didn't help our opnion of the town. There was no help with bags available. Our room and bathroom were small by any standards. Worst of all we had a room on the street - the main tourist street. Because the street is so narrow, any voices and noise carried into the room, even with shutters closed and drapes drawn. During the day the drone of the music from the wine shop down stairs was awful. The hotel offered the worst breakfast of any of our Siciily hotels by quite a bit. If you choose to visit Erice, we had an excellent dinner at Monte San Giuliano for a reasonable price.

Shoddy. Beds are lumpy, furnishings worn, staff phoning it in. There's no wireless. Rooms are cold. Cannot recommend Moderno, greatly disappointed. So surprised that this hotel is considered a good value on TA.

Arrived here for last minute one night stay during travelling . Rooms nothing like the photos . Very hard to get to and when get there in the middle of construction , dogs locked up barking all night . Doors being slammed all night . Hear all noises . No air con . No welcoming at hotel just key left in chair . Overall very poor worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in . Thought would be scenic looking at pictures and was looking over nothing but building being done . Had one hour sleep all night there was no consideration at all .

I had terrible experience at the check-in. Staff are not friendly and well trained. I asked to change my room because of bad smell and non-cleanness of it. They said we can't do that and you must pay extra to give you another room. At least the could give a clean and well dressed one. Hotel facilities are not even at 3-star level hotel. No drinking water, no coffee, no slippers, no parking and even no assistance from the staff to face with shortages. Safety box is very small and even doesn't look to be safe. Rooms are not well maintained. Highly recommend to avoid this bloody location. Don't waste your money and nice holidays by selecting that

Dated restaurant. Poor food. Packet pasta with chopped pork fat in tomato sauce for 12EUR?? No interest in receiving any comment about this. Complacent and rubbish food.
