As a long-standing *********** customer, this is the first time I have encountered such outrageous behavior from a property. I had a reservation with free cancellation up to one week before arrival (a card-guaranteed booking). One month before the arrival date, I received a message demanding full prepayment for the entire stay via a provided link, which I did not agree to. In response, the hotel challenged the validity of my card, and I received a notification from *********** requesting that I update my card details. I did so. Two hours later, I received the same request again and once more updated my card details (a credit card with sufficient available funds). Despite this, the property cancelled my reservation, which in my opinion had been planned from the very beginning. The hotel simply wanted to resell the room at a higher price — after my reservation was cancelled, the same room was listed at twice the original price. Acting in such bad faith is unacceptable and contrary to any standards of the tourism industry. The matter has been formally reported as a complaint, but I would like to warn others: this hotel does not respect agreements or its guests.

I strongly advise against booking this property! Our experience with Canopus Retreat Thulusdhoo is a textbook example of dishonesty. We had a confirmed reservation since August 2025 for a stay in March 2026. The confirmed conditions were clear: "No prepayment required" and "You will pay during your stay". The total cost was US$ 267.78. Suddenly, one month before arrival, the hotel sent a message at 4:00 AM demanding immediate payment via a suspicious external link. Although they explicitly promised us 48 hours to complete the payment, they cancelled our reservation just 11 hours later, completely ignoring the fact that we had already updated our card details in the official *********** system. The real reason? Minutes after our US$ 267.78 booking was cancelled, the same room for the same dates appeared online for US$ 485. This is a scandalous manipulation of the "invalid card" status to get rid of guests with lower rates and profit from the current market price. If you want a reliable stay and honest treatment, stay away from this place.

My regular fact based review AC - great WiFi - excellent Hot Water in Shower - plenty T-Mobile Service - yes (roaming) Power Outlets - my room had 2 Towels - they were ok Sheets - clean and good quality Breakfast - great Bed - very firm (for me it was not comfortable) Pillows - medium - not soft not sipper firm Room decor - good and maintained Room cleanliness - excellent Daily room cleaning - yes Safe for valuables - yes Noise - one of the fans in the lobby area was not balance and it would knock ( I lowered the speed at night and all was good) Food in restaurant - amazing good Safety in hotel / area - excellent This hotel is in the best place on the island. Walk out the door and you are on the bikini beach. They have a restaurant on the beach and they provide recliners for their guests. The owners are amazing. This is the best place we staid at in the Maldives. Would come here every time. Amazing place

We would like to thank Giovanni and Barbara for their warm welcome, hospitality, good conditions and a friendly atmosphere. What we really enjoyed was the tasty dinner and healthy breakfasts in the hotel, as well as the service. The balcony view and a beach were marvellous. We wish to come back to this place and enjoy our holidays in the near future!

It's a reasonable hotel, little water in the shower, polite and kind staff, good breakfast, but the negative point is that they are building a huge building next door, in the beautiful and paradisiacal Thulusdhoo, a giant skyscraper, the beginning of the end.

I would first like to say that the following review is not a reflection on the staff at Canopus - the staff are really friendly and generally very accommodating. The positives to start... the surrounding area of the apartment is really beautiful - right on the beach overlooking white sand and turquoise waters. The restaurant is particularly lovely and offers some great Italian food options. The waiting staff are very kind - for my boyfriends birthday they organised a really nice candle lit dinner on the beach which was really special. However, I do have to point out the negatives so that anyone planning to book Canopus is aware of them. Upon arriving, the restaurant/reception was really unclean and had a very bad smell - I can only imagine it was cat pee. I am a big animal lover and didn't mind the cats on the property, but be aware there are about 10 cats roaming around the indoor and outdoor restaurant as well as in the reception area. Additionally, I would like to make you aware that the building next door is a construction sight which is a bit of an eye-sore and also generates quite a bit of noise - however I think Canopus have now noted this on their website. We were asked to pay our bill before even seeing our room (which I thought was quite strange), only to be charged a higher price than quoted in the invoice - when I asked where the extra charge came from no one was able to tell me. We were then shown to our room (we were on the ground floor) and we were immediately hit with a seriously bad smell, which I suspect was linked to a drainage issue. The room felt very unclean and unkept - the bed sheets and towels were not clean, plug sockets were broken, there were bugs in the room and the bathroom looked as though it hadn't been cleaned. I informed the staff about the issues we had with our room and politely requested that we changed rooms. They were very understanding but explained they needed to confirm the room change with their boss, who was apparently on holiday in Italy. I had to keep asking the staff whether they had had a response from their boss, and after 2 hours of waiting we were reluctantly moved. We went to dinner only to see the boss sat at another table - so clearly not in Italy... I was very disappointed to see this and find out we had been lied to. I feel our issues would have been solved much quicker had the company been honest with us in the first place. I wanted people to be aware of our experience, particularly since I have read a couple of similar reviews, and want to make people aware of some of the issues at Canopus before they decide to book.

The Canopus is wonderful and in a truly amazing place. I read a few worrying reviews before we arrived, I can assure you, they are fake. There are cats on the island but they don't cause a problem and are treated very well by the locals and tourists. The whole place is very clean, well managed and friendly. The staff are amazing.

WARNING – DO NOT BOOK WITH CANOPUS! We had been looking forward to our stay at Canopus Hotel for six months, when we finally got there after travelling halfway round the world. We saved money for a long time to come to Thulusdhoo, and we had an ongoing dialog with the manager of the hotel all the way through – everything seemed fine, but we did NOT receive any information about what we`d soon come to experience. We arrived in February 2024 for a 15 day stay, and we were asked to pay the full bill before check in – we found that a bit strange but agreed since we were tired after a 24 hour trip to get there. Everything seemed fine when we were doing the payments but trouble started soon after – no wonder why they wanted all our money up front. We crawled our way over about 100 cats (and their inevitable smells and legacies) to get to our room in order to get a sought after shower and a much-needed rest. It was very disappointing to find a room in a condition far worse than what we expected from the information we were given, and what we think is fair to expect from what we paid – but again – we can manage to enjoy our rest and recuperation time in the Maldives in a not so good ( to say the least) room but as the holiday went on it became unbearable. As soon as we laid down on the bed for a stretch before lunch, they started to do some building work next door that sounded more like demolition – it was crazy and this went on throughout our stay. It was basically impossible to be in our room between 0700am and 630pm. We measured the noise to nearly 130db. We came to understand that the building they were building next door (a ten story concrete block) was done by the owners of Canopus. After shaking off the first shock we went to the beachfront restaurant, just to get the next sad disappointment. We didn’t even get the menus in our hands before eyebrows were raised – bulldozers and big diggers rolled back and forth on the beach moving big rocks and building a seawall. It was not possible to go for a swim out front and it was a noise so bad that we just left our table. The fact that the managers of the hotel, that we had been in running dialog with for six (6) months, did not ever mention ANY of this. What a disgrace! If you for some reason end up going here, bear in mind that: 1. This is a construction site. 2. The management under-communicates and twists the truth. 3. The other guests I was talking to shared my concerns. I was very kind in my complaints towards the staff, but I was not met with the kindness and understanding one would expect from a hotel. I could go on and on but it would be superfluous. The treatment we got and the facilities we “lived” in for 15 days was a degrading experience, and you should avoid this place at any kost. The place has dangerous noise, possible falling objects and bulldozers driving in-between tables and sunbeds. The fact that we did not get ANY information about the place being a con

Lovely quiet hotel right on the beach, friendly staff and good food for the area. Clean rooms, air conditioning and drinking water available. I stayed at this hotel at the end of May/beginning of June. I chose the hotel from the pictures and did not know what awaits me, but it was nice to see that the reality is beautiful, just like the photo. Cats are loved here - there are a lot of them everywhere in the common area. the hotel has an all-inclusive option, you can also order from the menu. For an island, the food is good. if you expect a rich variety of food and alcohol, then no. if you are going to surf at the best surf spot in the maldives, this is a great choice.
