Reviews
Everyone is so friendly, we would pass staff just walking along and be greeted with "Hola" and a smile.
I had the misfortune of breaking my ankle on our first evening here and the staff couldn't have been any more helpful. The on-site doctor arranged for me to visit a clinic and filled in all the paperwork,so when we got to the clinic, they were ready for us.
The hotel sourced a wheelchair for me, which was invaluable,as I wouldn't have been able to leave the room otherwise.
They would constantly check if we needed anything and how I was.
Shout out to Ramirez who served us drinks when we were at the beach. He got to know what drinks we had and would always bring them to us with a smile and fist bump.
Also a shout-out to Gladys at the Bo/Swichi bar. She remembered us from two years ago and was always smiling and helpfully pointed out the ramp to the bar.
It's a lovely place to relax and enjoy the sun.

Review:
I've visited several resorts in Punta Cana, but this was my first time at Catalonia Bavaro—and it truly impressed me. The resort is lush and green, making you feel like you're tucked away in a tropical forest. It's clean, peaceful, and completely walkable—no need to wait for shuttles.
Beach & Grounds:
The beach was stunning, with plenty of shaded areas and loungers. It never felt crowded, and the ground crew was up early each morning cleaning the sargassum, which kept the shoreline pristine.
Rooms:
Spacious and well-equipped with a mini fridge, coffee maker, and toiletries. I came prepared with Febreze and mosquito spray (high DEET concentration), but never needed them—no moldy smell or bug issues. Housekeeping was exceptional.
Pool & Entertainment:
The pool area was lively, featuring a swim-up bar and daily entertainment. If you want a shaded spot, go early and reserve it with your belongings.
Dining:
Buffet options were somewhat limited, with a heavy focus on pork and fish. If you don’t eat pork, your choices may feel restricted, and steak or other meat dishes were rare. That said, the food was tasty overall.
À la carte restaurants offered more variety:
- Italian: 4.5/5
- Sushi: 5/5
- Steakhouse: 3.5/5
- Spanish: Not rated, but part of the mix
Hidden Gems:
Don’t miss Aromes Coffee House and Terrace Tapas Lounge & Bar, tucked behind the casino near the shopping center. Aromes serves cappuccinos and lattes (with non-dairy options) and pastries in a cozy cottage setting. The Tapas Lounge opens in the evening and closes by midnight—run by two amazing bartenders who bring warmth and personality to the space.
Final Thoughts:
The staff made this trip unforgettable—from the warm greetings at the entrance to the attentive service at reception, housekeeping, pool bar, coffee shop, and restaurants. I hope the resort management recognizes and appreciates their incredible team.

Check-In & Reception:
After a long flight, I arrived expecting a smooth check-in process. The queue wasn’t long, but the wait was unnecessarily slow due to the front desk staff struggling with the system. When it was finally my turn, the receptionist was noticeably less courteous than he had been with previous guests. He attempted to upsell me to a higher-tier room for added privileges (which I’ll detail shortly). I had reserved a double bed, but he offered a room with two singles instead. When I declined and reiterated my original request, his demeanor became noticeably more unfriendly. There was no information provided about the hotel layout, amenities, or what my booking included — just a room number and a direction to the bellboy.
When I asked the bellboy where my room was, he offered to take my suitcase. I declined, and in response, he claimed not to know where the room was. Only after some insistence did he vaguely point left. This is not the level of service anyone should expect from a professional establishment.
Room Conditions:
The room was in very poor condition — outdated, musty, and in disrepair. The shower curtain was moldy and clung to the body, the bathtub was dirty, towels were torn, walls showed signs of mold, and tiles were cracked or missing. It did not feel clean or comfortable.
All-Inclusive? Not Quite.
The hotel is divided into tiers: Basic, Privilege, and Exclusive. If you’re in a Basic room (i.e., you don’t pay for an upgrade), you're restricted from using certain beach areas, bars, and pools. VIP guests even receive discounts at on-site shops, making the experience feel quite segregated and unfair.
Housekeeping Issues:
Housekeeping removed used towels but failed to replace them. After a long day of sightseeing, I returned to find no towels in the room. I had to go to reception and wait **two hours** for them to be delivered.
Power Outage:
There was a lengthy power outage during my stay. With no electricity, no air conditioning, and no information from the front desk, it was a very uncomfortable and frustrating experience.
Service & Language Barrier:
There appeared to be a clear preference for Spanish-speaking guests. English-speaking guests were often ignored or treated with indifference. Tipping seemed to be the only way to get basic service. I also witnessed questionable hygiene practices in the dining area — a dropped utensil was picked up off the floor and placed back on a table. It’s not surprising that I experienced stomach issues afterward.
Food Quality:
The food was consistently bland and disappointing. Vegetables were undercooked, and the variety of meat and fish was extremely limited. I’ve never encountered such poor food quality in a resort.
Transportation & Tours:
If you book external taxis or tours, the hotel does not allow the drivers to enter the premises. This means walking around 15 minutes to the main gate to meet your transport. This seems deliberately inconvenient, likely to push guests toward overpriced in-house services.
Final Thoughts:
In summary, if you do not speak Spanish, expect to feel excluded and undervalued. This hotel seems to cater almost exclusively to Spanish-speaking guests. The combination of poor service, substandard accommodations, and a lack of professionalism made for an extremely frustrating stay.
Unfortunately, my overall experience was mixed. We were placed right next to a construction site, which meant early morning wake-ups to the sound of drilling. That definitely affected the relaxation I was hoping for.
The biggest issue, however, was the service in the dining areas. On our first day, service was excellent — we were seated, offered water immediately, and even asked if we wanted wine or drinks. Sadly, that was the last time the service felt that attentive. Most of the time, it felt as if younger guests (like us) were overlooked. We often had to stand up and ask for drinks ourselves, while older guests at nearby tables received table service without hesitation. At one point, I asked for orange juice and was told to get it myself, even though guests at the next table (who looked 35–45) had it brought to them right away.
It created an uncomfortable feeling — almost as if we weren’t taken seriously because of our age (I’m 25). I also noticed other young couples facing the same issue. Meanwhile, some staff members seemed disengaged, sometimes standing around or joking with each other instead of serving guests.
There were also smaller frustrations: one time, as I left the buffet, a staff member let the net door fall directly in my face while holding hands with another employee who walked through. Moments like this made the service feel unprofessional.
To end on a positive note, the hotel location is great, the beach is wonderful, and the overall atmosphere is enjoyable. But service in the dining areas — especially consistency and fairness — really needs improvement. With better training and a more respectful approach to all guests, this resort could easily be excellent
