Hotel le Corbusier in Marseille

The manager of this hotel would be far more suited to working in a school rather than hospitality. Her system of rules - and unpleasant manner with children - make this a most inhospitable, inflexible place, rather like Miss Trunchbull’s school in the book Matilda. She told me to clear away my breakfast things with a tray (seriously, it’s almost £200 a night, I am on holidaying in a hotel which means a break from tidying up) and admonished my five year old for shrinking away from after she demanded that he say good morning. When he refused she told him that he was not interesting to her and from now on she would ignore him. Had someone so fiercely shoved their face in mine and demanded a greeting, I would not say hello either. There was also a penny pinching, inflexible approach to food and ordering which meant that: nothing was particularly nice; and one avoided eating as it meant being locked into a 3 course 60 Euro dinner menu. She would get you pay for everything up front and if you changed your mind - say about not having breakfast, there was no reimbursement. Go in order to see the history, stay one night if you must but otherwise I recommend you find a lovely welcoming place in the centre of town and avoid this hotel at all costs!!

I am only covering an experience in the cafe and did not stay. But be wary - do not expect a warm welcome. I tried to pay for my coffee and croissant by card. I missed a sign at the bar that said min spend of €20. I offered to pay more than the bill. The owner said that it was the law to have a minimum spend. I’m not French, but I doubt it. The point is that it will be easy to get in a dispute in this place. In the end, I paid nothing and there was a lot of muttering and gesticulating. Not a satisfying experience for either party. But very disappointing/ unnecessary for me to feel the anger of the person berating me. NB visiting the building for those interested in Le Corbusier is recommended.
