I wanted to spend a weekend experiencing the floating tram in Wuppertal. This is why I booked to stay at the Four Essen city Centre. When I booked, I thought I was booking into a four point flex similar style of hotel. I was very surprised, and disappointed, by what greeted me when I arrived. The hotel is tired and extremely dated. I felt like I had gone back to the early 1990s, with my room feeling untouched since that time. However, I will be positive and say that the room was extremely clean. The usual places you would expect to find dust and dirt, were extremely clean and clear. This is obviously a very well looked after hotel, and despite its shortcomings in modernity and room design, it was at least comfortable clean and warm. However, the kind of hotels that I enjoy staying in, means that I would probably never visit this hotel again.

I booked a room for 4 nights, when I checked in, the reception told me that the hotel is significantly overbooked and I have to go another hotel to stay for one night, and move back the other day, and wait for hours to check in again!
The room is small, old, dirty and air condition out of order, I need to use a fan in the hot summer!

Stayed 4 nights, they charge €50 damages fee per night, so over €200! This was almost more than the cost of my total reservation! Then every night as the “system updated” they kept charging more pre authorisations, €150 on the first night, then €100 again. When I asked staff about this they were clueless, and said it randomly happened due to the system. I got locked out of my travel card which was very stressful. The rooms are fine, its clean, and the location is good. Also beware, NO aircon!

We stayed 2x nights with our football team in this hotel. Ok not new, but we knew that. Good service, good breakfast, nice rooms. Price/ quality I'm ok with this hotel.

This hotel used to be good .. but now rooms looking tired and old .. not told there wouldn’t be a bath only a shower. Front of house Bar etc all ok rooms very dirty & no net curtains so have to shut main curtains when out of shower .. staff great helpful & friendly.. its obviously owners not investing the money for an overdue revamp.. breakfast always good .. but bar / restaurant shut some nights ., so brought own beers in & Sat in bar & used there glasses lol!! Used to be much better & coming here for 20 yrs will think seriously about rebooking next April …

Holiday Inn Express Essen ***

This is a budget city hotel with basic amenities. The property shows its age, which is noticeable in certain details.

The rooms are clean and spacious but unfortunately lack air conditioning, which can be uncomfortable during warmer periods. Noise from the street is quite significant even with the windows closed, which might disturb your sleep and affect the overall experience. The internet is extremely slow and practically unusable, which is a major downside, especially for business travelers.

As a Platinum member, I did not receive any special welcome or benefits, which was disappointing given the expectations from this hotel chain.

Overall, an average stay that might suit undemanding travelers, but it comes with some significant drawbacks.
