Description

Hostel Die Wohngemeinschaft is a 2-star hostel in Cologne offering a range of room types including dorm beds (mixed and female-only), and various private standard rooms from singles up to family-sized rooms. The beds in dorms are notably larger than typical hostel beds, about the size of a small double, with privacy curtains and secure lockers accessible via key cards. Guests appreciate the clean, well-maintained bathrooms and the availability of towels and hairdryers. The hostel provides free coffee and tea, alongside a free ginger shot, and encourages socializing with a common area, bar on the ground floor, and table tennis. While there is no self-catering kitchen, a shared kitchen space offers hot water and cutlery for cold meals. The staff are frequently described as friendly, helpful, and English-speaking. Heating is available, but air conditioning is absent, which can make summer stays less comfortable. The hostel operates a key-secured elevator and offers free parking and WiFi.

Location

Located at Richard-Wagner-Str. 39 in Cologne, the hostel sits about 15 km from Cologne/Bonn Airport (CGN). The nearest tram or metro stops are a short walk away, though not immediately adjacent, making public transport accessible but requiring a brief walk. Nearby conveniences include an Aldi supermarket just a couple of blocks away and several dining options within 300 meters, such as Restaurant Boquerones (243 m), a local restaurant (278 m), and Guten Abend Bio Restaurant (289 m). The hostel is also close to a local park and a brewery, offering leisure opportunities close by. Guests find the area lively with bars and cafes, and the hostel’s bar downstairs adds to the local atmosphere.

Tips

  • Plan your arrival before 9:30 PM to avoid self check-in procedures at the bar.
  • Bring a fan or light bedding if visiting in summer due to lack of air conditioning.
  • Use the secure lockers provided for your valuables and enjoy free coffee and tea available 24/7 in the common area.

Visited Cologne for the Christmas Markets Location: The hostel isn’t in a bad location, though it’s a short walk from the nearest tram or metro stop. It’s situated above a bar (which I didn’t use, but it’s handy to know for late check-ins), and there’s an Aldi just a couple of blocks away—very convenient. Room/Comfort: I chose this hostel for its beds, and they did not disappoint. While it’s not quite a capsule hotel, it’s very close! The beds are incredibly comfortable, spacious (larger than a single but not quite a double), and each comes with a locker secured by a key card. A major plus for privacy and comfort. Facilities: The bathrooms were spotlessly clean and plentiful. The “kitchen” area includes a hot drinks machine, with hot water flasks refilled overnight (though they were lukewarm by morning). There’s a kettle but no tap, so no way to prepare hot meals—though plates and cutlery are available for cold or pre-prepared food. Service: I didn’t have much interaction with the staff, but everyone I spoke to was friendly, polite, and spoke English. Overall: A great choice for travelers who value comfort, privacy, and a convenient location—especially if you’re exploring Cologne’s Christmas markets!

If you're passing through Colonia, this is a good accommodation option. About 20 minutes from the central station, this hostel has all the necessary amenities. The only downside for me is the lack of air conditioning, which makes it unbearable to sleep in during the hot season, although the fan helps a little. The shared bathrooms were always clean, and they provide towels. As a guest, you get a 10% discount at the bar downstairs, and they also give you a token to exchange for a pint there. There are many dining options nearby, including shops, cafes, and bars. There's even a taco food truck and a lovely park with a brewery downstairs.

Such a great spot would heavily recommend. The rooms were so comfortable and the beds where way bigger than any other hostel Ive stayed in. The bar downstairs is lovely and the whole area around it was great. Staff was super friendly and the whole vibe of the place was great.

Really comfortable, clean and secure. My first solo travel experience and I was anxious about how secure my belongings would be. I couldn't have been happier with the accommodation. For such a popular and busy bar, noise was relatively nonexistent.

I only stayed one short night in that hostel but I wish I could have stayed a bit longer. I booked a dorm in the ballroom one, women only, the booth was great. Comfy and very large bed for one person, tablet/light/plug for the phone, everything I needed once I was up there. I could put my valued belongigs in a closed locker which was really appreciated. The key in the lift to the hostel was given me a feeling of safety which is always good when you travel solo. The common room was decorated with taste, I didn't use it but a kitchen is always of good use in a hostel. For the price it was a real bargain, I highly recommend this hostel !

All the staff are helpful and super friendly. All the rooms were very clean. We'll definitely be back. The common room is great too, and the location is perfect! Everything is within easy reach. It's a bit noisy on weekends, but bearable. Seriously, great job! Best hostel so far.

The hotel does have private rooms available, so that's what we got for our family with younger kids. The location is out of the city centre, but public transport made this distance less of an issue. The hostel is still located with a lot of local places of interest too. (over the road if one of the best cafes I've been to for breakfast anywhere I've stayed - Cafe Buur) The staff were helpful, and easy to speak with. We had booked a different room to the one we got, and had a lot less space. Each bunk still allowed us decent privacy and we slept well. The common areas are kept very clean too. Each room has a unique decoration theme - ours was the circus.

I spent one night in the women's dormitory, ballet studio. The beds were very large and comfortable. The room was bright and spacious. The breakfast buffet was small, but still offered a good selection.

There is no parking lot, the elevator is out of service, and there is no bathroom in the room. It is a shared bathroom, which means you have to get up in the middle of the night to pee, and you have to open your own door and go out to find the toilet. If you want to take a shower, you have to queue up and wait for others to finish before you can go in. This is simply not a hotel, not even a carriage shop. Not to mention asking me to pay to stay here again, even if I'm asked to stay here for free, I won't agree. Four of us carried eight suitcases from the first floor to the sixth floor. The hotel does not have front desk service, or the front desk service is only available until 9:30 in the evening. If you want to check in later than 9:30, you must go to the bar front desk to find a waiter for self-service check-in. The surrounding environment is also very dirty and messy, and it doesn't look like Germany at all. I regret very much, why did I choose this hotel? Fortunately, I only stayed for two nights and decided to cancel the stay, complain and switch to another hotel. I strongly don't recommend anyone else to stay here unless you want to make it difficult for yourself. The quilt in the room is also very small. It cannot cover myself in a lifetime and is always left out to dry in the middle of the night. Coupled with the lack of heating in the room, these two nights were a disaster. Even if I want to ask for more quilts, I can't find the waiter because they get off work at 9:30. Life again, this is not a hotel, not even an inn, at most it is a carriage shop.
