Hotel Balilla in Rome

We only stayed one night. For a short stay this place would be okay. But for a longer stay I don't think it would be that great. The location is close to the train station but in a quieter more residential area. Not bad but at night it is very dark. There are restaurants close by and the walk was very quick. I don't know I would want to walk a long distance in the neighborhood at dark. I did see lots of local families walking around at night so I guess it wasn't that bad. The reception people are nice and courteous. They helped me with our luggage. So I liked that. The room itself is very basic. It is clean though. The bed was a bit hard and we only got two very flat pillows. I will say the sheets were very soft so it made up for the hardness of the bed. There is a wardrobe to store luggage and clothes. The TV was nice but there is no Netflix or streaming options so you can watch Italian TV only. The bathroom was a bit odd. The toilet worked fine and it was clean. The sink didn't drain well and the shower head was broken so I had to hold it for it to work. The holder for the shower head was broken. The hot water worked but kind of came and went which was annoying. It wasn't cold but more lukewarm and then about 2 minutes later it got hot again. When it was hot, it was really nice. The soaps and shampoos were nice and I liked that. The breakfast which I thought was free was actually charged. They mention they have breakfast but I assumed it was included. The reception person felt bad and discounted my breakfast. They make great coffee but the cornetto (croissant) was absolutely horrible. The people at the breakfast were very nice and personable. I would say in summary that this is good for a very short stay but I wouldn't stay for a long time.

You get what you pay for with this hotel. While it’s not the worst place to stay if you just need a bed, depending on your reason for traveling such as for a honeymoon . I suggest spending the extra money to have water in your fridge, comfortable pillows, nice blankets, and a more comfortable bed. It’s not as close to the main square in Rome as you would think. About a 25 minute walk. The hotel was clean , the area was not very safe. On the outermost city limits of Rome. we were spoiled much more in Sorrento for a similar priced hotel . I would only stay here if you are simply looking for a bed to sleep in and a shower .
