Takayama, 2-96-2 Hatsudamachi (in the centre) 🧭 Map
We stayed here for one night to experience a Japanese Ryokan and to make use of the onsen. This is a small, family-run Ryokan. On arrival, you are given a kimono and slippers to wear, as no shoes are allowed inside. The staff are welcoming and friendly. We had a traditional Japanese dinner here which consisted of several courses and we came away full! The onsen was very relaxing and I had it to myself...
Really friendly and nice touches like choosing your own kimono for wear around the hotel. Onsen just had 1 bathing place but it was quiet, nice and clean.
We had the best stay at Royokan Asunaro. Very comfortable room and beds.
The staff is sublime, the Japanese style breakfast I would come back for it was so good.
Location is perfect for exploring Takayama and other areas nearby.
We had a wonderful stay at Ryokan Asunaro. The onsen was relaxing, the traditional tatami rooms were beautiful, and the staff was very friendly. I had a medical emergency and had to go to the hospital one evening so we were not able to make it back in time for the curfew (11pm), but they kept the doors open for us. The location is also very convenient, within a short walk from the bus and train stations...
Very very warm and friendly staffs!! Definitely one of the cleanest and best maintained hotel I have visited, and worths a second visit next time. Just a 10 mins short walk and you can reach all popular attractions in Takayama including the Old Street.
We went as a group and we loved the ryokan. It was very spacious, everything was very clean, and it was conveniently located near the bus station, the train station, and the city center where most of the shopping takes place. The rooms were the most spacious we stayed in throughout Japan, and the staff were all very kind. I would definitely stay here again.

The room is spacious. Dinner is delicious. The futon is very comfortable to sleep.
Great ryokan experience. Food was great. Would recommend.
If visiting Japan then you can't not stay in a traditional Ryokan for at least part of your stay! This one is ideally situated about a 10 minute flat walk from the train station (so very easy for visiting other local towns like Hida Furukawa like we did) and a few minutes walk to the pedestrianised streets with their wooden traditional buildings. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our room ...
Recommend to book this experience. It's not just a hotel, you pay for experience.
Excellent!! Highly recommended!!! The service was superb!!!
We stayed for 2 nights at Ryokan Tanabe as part of a 2 week tour of Japan. The Ryokan is a 90 year old traditional Japanese inn. The rooms are tatami mat, with futons on the floor, and all the rituals of traditional Japanese life. Bathing is i the onsen, public baths in the hot springs. Service was absolutely excellent, and the ryokan had a really homely and cosy feels, in part because of the narrow...

Whilst we are glad we stayed here for the laughs and stories we will dine out on, it missed the bar by a big way as a Westerner it wasn’t designed for us. We did embrace the meal the first night. The food was not to our taste. Other places we felt comfortable eating Japanese food but not for us here. The lady who spoke English… used a translation app which was fine but she was extremely passive aggressive...
This is a lovely, traditional ryokan, which means the furnishings and bathrooms and such are a bit dated. It is very quiet and both our private hot springs and the public one were comfortable. Enjoyed the hospitality overall, though few staff speak English very well.
A nice little Ryokan. The food was beautifully presented and delicious - only hiccup was that despite the fact we’d told them in advance that a couple of us didn’t eat seafood - we were served seafood at each meal - besides that, the beef was delicious and good serving portions. The lady who looked after us during our stay was very nice and always happy. The location is slightly out of the main hustle...
We stayed in four ryokans during our trip to Japan and this was easily the best of them, despite its official three-star grading (small TVs and some tired furnishings may explain that), set apart from the rest because of its simply outstanding hospitality and service. Staff here not only welcome guests with genuine warmth but also work hard to anticipate needs. Two examples from many: 1) We arrived...
A pleasant Ryokan. Food was beautifully presented and quite good. Some of the little dishes were excellent, others less so. Our lady who was looking after us was called Emily and was very kind and friendly and helpful. The location is slightly out of the main hustle and bustle but they do provide a shuttle service. Was a nice experience but somehow was expecting a little more really. Worthy of a solid...
I have no other ryokan onsen places to compare this to, but this place was simply outstanding. Only 15 rooms. Ours had our own private onsen on the porch with continuously flowing hot spring water; had no need to use the larger communal hotel onsens. They give you slippers and kimonos to wear to meals and pajamas. Dinner was a 12 course Kaiseki gourmet extravaganza with at least 25 different items...

Extremely quiet, elegant, and comfortable — a truly memorable stay. I'll definitely be back. Special thanks to Takayama EPT for their great help!
Its 10 mins away from train station and bus station .Hotel room very good size . I love the wooden bath tub . If you want to see the old village Shirakawa it would be very handy for you cause it.s 40 mins bus away from takayama . Takayama is a lovely town too . The room was very spacious and extremely close to the train station. There are many famous restaurants nearby, and you can walk to Takayama Old Town.
A very comfortable experience; the wooden design made me feel right at home, so the facilities were all complete, and the bathroom amenities were very thoughtful, with heating, drying, and ventilation. The location was also very convenient, very close to the station.
The room was large and fully equipped, but the bathtub wasn't made of wood; the faux wood grain finish was a bit odd.

The hotel staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful. As soon as we arrived, they cleaned our suitcases and carried them to our room. The room and all other hotel areas were spotless. The private onsen in the room was a definite highlight. Highly recommended!
It was a bit tricky to find the entrance initially because of the snow accumulation, which obscured the sign.
Food is very tasty and fresh meat..
I booked a package including breakfast and dinner. The room was okay, but the air conditioning was only in the bedroom; the living room and other areas were a bit cold. The bedroom air conditioning wasn't very effective either. Dinner was quite good, but the price was a bit high. For the same price difference, I could probably get more meat outside. Eating at the hotel was just more convenient. The...
The room design and comfort are excellent, perfectly blending with nature. The hot springs are outstanding and ideal for relaxation. The dinner food was very fresh, but the Japanese breakfast was definitely not to my taste. The staff's English was very basic, but they were very smiling and patient. With the help of a translator, I got perfect answers. Plus, the snow outside made the scenery absolutely spectacular! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Environment: A hotel nestled in the mountains!
Cleanliness: Very clean and tidy, the private onsen (hot spring bath) is fantastic!

Loved our stay here! Great location near lots of good restaurants. Walking distance to major attractions and 10 min walk from the bus station for day trips. Huge perk is the onsen inside the hotel!
It is very convenient to go to Miyagawa Morning Market, free parking is provided, free hot tea and coffee are available in the lobby, although the hotel room feels a bit old, it is clean and sanitary, and the cost-effectiveness is worth staying.
Great hotel in the hearth of Takayama, very close to the morning market and the many other activities located in the city. It has a parking and the pice for one night is slightly below other hotels in the area (at the time of writing).
The room feels a bit outdated but still very cozy and with all you need for a short stay. Restaurant next to the hotel provide the breakfast which is mostly Japanese...
The hotel is right opposite the Miyagawa Morning Market, but the hotel signage is not very obvious. Older building, front desk service is very helpful. Free coffee and tea are provided. I didn't go for breakfast because I overslept, but the view from the room was great. It is more convenient to live near the station and go to Kamikochi early in the morning.
Good location near market and temple

The location and environment are excellent, the hygiene is good, the breakfast and dinner are plentiful, there is ample parking, the staff are friendly, it's a great hotel, the rooms are comfortable, and check-in is quick.
The only good thing about this place is its excellent location, right next to the ropeway station and convenient for bus travel. The natural scenery is decent, but for a hot spring town, it's quite ordinary. On top of that, it's not very friendly to Chinese guests; the dining area for them is relegated to a small separate room. The 'one meal, two nights' package was also very disappointing. I don't...
Had a wonderful stay! Even though the room was a bit old-fashioned, it was still very comfortable overall. The location was convenient, and the hot springs were fantastic.
Location is great for traveling Shinhotaka Ropeway
Surprisingly it was very good...varieties of food for dinner and breakfast.clean place.free ticket and lunch to Shinhotaka ropeway.i will definitely come back back again..small issue is that the reception difficulty understanding english other thant everything good.
Great location. Right nest to Ropeway station so you can easily take the nohi bus directly from Takayama to the hotel. A very unique and traditional Ryokan !!
Everything about our stay was delightful! Delicious, healthy food, exceptional staff, and a beautiful inn.
Hidden gem Ryokan experience
This was a highlight of our roundtrip. Everything was above expectations and a very special and relxed stay in a beautiful ryokan with excellent staff. Gourmet traditional dinner and private onsen time included.
An exceptional and authentic Japanese experience. Worth going out of your way to visit. The atmosphere is simply stunning
We stayed two nights at Wanasato and it was great. The room was huge with great views on the river and a nice bathroom. The Japnese style dinners were excellent (be ready for some unusual tastes) and the service was perfect. Private access to the onsen was great. Overall a great experience. On the improvement side, the exterior of the ryokan is disappointing and the garden could be better maintained
We had a really wonderful time at Wanosato experiencing winter and snow in authentic Japanese setting. The staff were really welcoming and made our stay special, every detail of our stay was taken care of.
We had the half-board with dinner and breakfast included. Really tasty dishes and tailored for us.

Absolutely wonderful experience! The hosts were wonderful people! There are 6 rooms and 6 private baths (2 outdoor, 4 indoor) — it is RARE to find a ryokan with this kind of room-to-bath ratio. Very good location! 2 minute walk to the bus and train station. 5 minute walk to the old town section of the city.
The room was great. There was a bunk bed and a single bed, sleeping three people. It had an en-suite bathroom, an iron, and complete kitchen equipment including a rice cooker, frying pan, microwave, and refrigerator. The bathroom also had a bathtub.
Highly recommended.
Close to the station. Calm place with lots of room (we were only two people). You get send codes for the two doors, which is really nice instead of having to deal with keys or keycards. Beds were comfy as well.

The hotel is beautiful both inside and out. It's convenient to drive there, and public transportation is available, but not so convenient... Wonder place the private Japanese style hot spring bath.
The Japanese breakfast was delicious, the room was spacious, and the hot spring bath was separate. It was very relaxing and comfortable.
Very spacious room with a terrace and a private natural onsen on it (windows can be opened or closed if it’s too cold). Beautiful surroundings, and the bus stop isn’t far, making the place suitable for travelers without a car. Too bad we had only one short evening to spend there — the place is definitely worth more time.
Pros:
Huge room
Lovely surroundings, very peaceful
Awesome private onsen in the room
Very helpful staff (but it seemed like there were only 3 of them running the whole place, so sometimes it took a while to find someone to help)
Cons:
Beds are quite hard
Towels are thin and dry
Breakfast was not a buffet like we were told in our booking
Though is not a neatly built and refined resort hotel,
every guests can enjoy gorgeous private onsen.
I appreciate such exclusive moment only here.

Last night I walked from Takayama Station with my luggage for about 6 minutes, which was very convenient. When I arrived at the hotel, I gave it a score of 9. It is a very quiet and stylish hotel. As soon as we entered the door, we were greeted by an older Japanese woman who was very polite and kind. We were dragging two large suitcases (all covered with snow) and when we were filling...

Wow, what an amazing stay we had here from start to finish. We stumbled on this place last minute when we decided we wanted a little more time in the mountains and I am so grateful that we did, it was the most perfect hidden gem for our stay. Warm, kind, welcoming and genuinely caring staff that make the stay feel like you’re at home, they couldn’t have done more for us. They took us to the ropeway...

During my 2 month long trip in Japan, this is in my top 3 best things! This onsen is perfect after long hikes in the alps. We had a private onsen, house to ourselfs and traditional japanese dinner/breakfeast, it was amazing. The owner is very nice and helped us with our cleaning for free. The price was very good for the service that we got, thank you!
We loved everything, amazing lunch and dinner, convenient location, hospitable hotel staff and a large selection of onsens!
We are Vietnamese, and we are visiting Takayama for the first time. We discovered this osen using Google Maps and were really fortunate to get a super large and super beautiful room here. The cuisine was excellent. The owner is adorable and energetic. The onsen bath area is really relaxing and comfortable. We will surely return if we had the opportunity.
Great place! Warm and welcome hospitality. We came spontaneously and they welcomed us and let us eat dinner (which was great!) even though we didn’t reserve before. At the end one of the staff took us to our next destination (the ropeway) and it was very convenient. Great food, great people, great value for money, in a beautiful place.
