It wasn't worth the price.

Perhaps my expectations were too high beforehand. The room was small, old, and a bit cramped, lacking any unique features. The only saving grace was that it was clean.

The service wasn't great either. Even though they knew I was in my late pregnancy and checked in at 11:00 AM, they still gave me a room that was far away and required climbing a very steep staircase.

The food was mediocre. In short, it was completely not worth the price.

Staying again after 9 years, I was disappointed that the room wasn't as big as before, especially the bathroom. Both nights were served kaiseki cuisine, unlike the previous time when I opted for Xiabu Xiabu on the second night. The room attendant was incredibly friendly, smiling broadly and practically running over from five meters away.

A delightful Inn with charming and very helpful staff. The dinner and breakfast could only be described as delicious and scrumptious .
A great variety of food was served in our room.
Then table was cleared Futons laid out and we drifted off to an excellent night’s sleep.
The boathouse in the Inn has a double wooden tub for a delightfull soak after a scrubbing

Our train was delayed by a typhoon, so we arrived much later than expected and almost missed dinner. The staff could not have been kinder — they waited for us patiently and still served the full Summer Kaiseki Dinner Course we had booked. Their grace and professionalism after such a delay set the tone for the entire stay. The kaiseki dinner was excellent — beautifully balanced, seasonal, and among the best I have had in Kyoto. Each dish reflected summer ingredients at their peak. For a Western palate, some flavors may feel subtle rather than exotic, but the overall harmony and craftsmanship were unmistakable. I also ordered a wagyu steak as an extra course, which was of outstanding quality. Breakfast can be served either in your room or in a private dining room. As we were staying in multiple rooms, we chose to eat together in the private dining room. Both the Japanese and Western breakfasts were superb — carefully prepared and elegantly presented. Guests can enjoy a bath in their own room’s cedar tub or request a larger bath to be prepared in a separate bath area. I tried the latter — spacious enough for a taller guest or a couple — and found it deeply relaxing after a long travel day. I stayed on the second floor of the main building in a room dating back to the 1800s, with golden fusuma doors and a strong sense of history. Sitting with tea by the garden in the morning light was quietly unforgettable; I didn’t want to leave until checkout. Our room attendant was wonderful — precise, caring, and attentive in every detail. Although she spoke very little English, her warmth and professionalism made communication effortless. The rooms were spotless, and the futon laid out during dinner was firm yet very comfortable. Hiiragiya’s location is excellent — right in the heart of Kyoto, within easy walking distance of the Nishiki Market and many central temples, yet once inside it feels entirely still and private. What makes Hiiragiya truly special is how tradition is not displayed but lived — felt in the rhythm of the service, the quiet gestures of care, and the continuity of a house that has welcomed guests for generations. Hiiragiya embodies the spirit of Kyoto hospitality: refined, gracious, and timeless. I can’t wait to return — this ryokan is a destination in itself.

We had gotten a tip from friends thatvhad stayed here some years back. So when planning our Japan-holiday and stay in Kyoto we were happy spending our last Night here. The building itself are amazing. The old history of the house and room were just wow. Also still loved all the modern amenities in the room such as Japanese toilet, chatgers etc. The small bathroom felt like a mini-spa and the futons prepared for sleeping gave us the best sleep. We also had the set menu and japanese breakfast all prepared in the room. Quite the experience - will never regret - but it was sometimes challenging when it came to some of the dishes. But again; that’s all part of the experience. We loved the stay and the people working there was over the top superfriendly and service-minded. Wifi also…:) would def recommend for one Night of traditional Japanese living.

★Dining: A delightful culinary experience with delicious meals and an exceptional selection of beverages. ★Facilities: The inn's interior is beautifully designed, and the rooms offer excellent amenities, aesthetics, comfort, and picturesque views from the windows. The bedding and sleep environment are also exceptionally comfortable, and the bathing facilities are well-appointed. ★Extraordinary Experience: The inn's location allows easy access to the city center and festival venues, providing a sense of joy, novelty, and a desire to boast about the high-quality Ryokan experience. ★Hospitality: The staff's attentiveness and warm hospitality, along with convenient reservation and usage systems, contribute to an exceptional stay. ★Value: The Ryokan offers a highly satisfying experience that matches its reasonable pricing.

Poor value proposition. Way overpriced for over €1000 a night. The hotel interiors are indeed lovely but the management is humourless and strict, the service perfunctory and more out of convenience for the staff than the client. The food and service were below expectations and are below average, generally. The kind of over-"recommended" hotel that charges you triple just for the name and has gotten lazy therefore.

Very convenient location, good access to public transport. Rooms are quite nice, older wing rooms have bamboo flooring rather than tatami. Staff were very helpful with any questions and were really lovely. Shoes must come off in doorway of ryokan.

Lovely service and our steaks were cooked to perfection. Delightfully cosy inside, and also the music was great!

My rating is for the ryokan experience, which is incredibly accommodating and comfortable. The room was roomy and the bed soft and comfortable. The staff went above and beyond to make our whole stay as easy and relaxing as possible. Me and my girlfriend stayed six nights and had a lot of heavy luggage, and after checkout the staff called a taxi, sat us down and gave us hot coffee while we waited, and then gave us an umbrella and loaded our luggage into the taxi.

Hands down the best out of five places we stayed at during our Japan trip.

Easy going, simple and nice. Menu isn't very diverse but that's ok, food/beer combination is well thought about. There are 2 tables next to the entrance (at the right) which are facing sun in the afternoon, it's particularly good in summer.

Cute café and mix of ryokan. Nice selection of craft beers. Bit on the expensive side tho, 900 yen for a craft pint.

Came across this restaurant and notice that is a hostel and cafe mix. When I went in, there was a lot of people so I felt that the food is probably good and I was right! The lunch menu has around 5 choices and I decided to take the smoked pork. I didn't regret a thing!

At first I thought the portion was small but I was wrong and it was filling! The smoked pork has a really nice texture and the sauces is sweet with a tingly taste. I would go back and try the others!
