I was adamant that I wanted to experience a stay in an authentic Japanese style room with tatami flooring, and this hotel did not disappoint. I loved being able to immerse myself into the experience and make up our futon beds on the floor to sleep in (which might I add was much more comfortable than first thought!). Staff were very friendly and offered amazing recommendations to nearby restaurants, shrines and shops within Kyoto. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the chance to book the private onsen in time but it was great knowing this is available too. We were also so hapy to be able to store all of our luggage with the hotel prior to check-in so that the exploring could begin as soon as we arrived in Kyoto.

This was my second time staying here and I always love coming back. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful with great english. The hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous and each room comes with a yukata for your stay. The location is conveniently located next to the train station and near the nishiki market as well. I highly recommend it to solo travelers as well as friends and family. It’s a fantastic place to stay.

I booked a loft room with a garden, which was split into two levels. The only good points were that the bathroom was clean and the front desk staff were quite friendly. Other than that, it was all downsides. I originally wanted to try a tatami room, but the overall layout was small, and the tatami mat was very hard, even with a mattress on it. The duvet had a musty smell, like it had been stored for a long time, and the duvet cover didn't fully enclose the duvet, leaving parts exposed. No one came to make the bed, so I had to do it myself every night. The decor was old, dust was floating under the lights, and there was no light in the center of the room's ceiling at all, making the corners very dim. The bath towels smelled unpleasant.

Furthermore, the advantages of being a loft and having a garden were completely lost. The stairs were very steep, and each step only allowed for half of your foot to fit. The old stairs creaked loudly when walked on, raising safety concerns, and the corners of the stairs were easy to trip on. I even bumped my ankle going to the bathroom in the middle of the night, which was quite painful. The garden view was just a gravel path with some grass, completely different from the example photos. Plus, being upstairs made it inconvenient to go up and down. For 1,100 a night, it really wasn't worth it. I hope people will seriously consider before choosing this hotel. If you're just looking for an experience, you can find a newer hotel.

My family of three booked a standard Japanese-style room. We were initially worried about the room being too small and whether we'd be comfortable sleeping on the tatami mats. But upon arrival, we were delighted. The hotel was clean and spacious, and the quaint Japanese-style room was beautiful, with two large closets. The bathroom was also incredibly large. Although it says 10 square meters, I think it was at least 10 square meters, perfectly accommodating the three of us! It was simple, elegant, and cozy. The service was excellent. Even better, Shijo Street is right outside the hotel, and we even had Kyoto's best eel rice at Daimaru Department Store. 🍱 Shijo Street offers beautiful views, a wide variety of delicious restaurants, and convenient public transportation and subway connections. 👍🏻👍🏻
The only downside might be the average soundproofing, but it's manageable.
I love Kyoto and will definitely stay at this hotel again next time I visit. This hotel brought back wonderful memories of my time in Kyoto.

Experience Japanese tatami for one night. The hotel is a ten-minute walk from Shijo. There are many restaurants and convenience stores nearby, which is very convenient. It is also very quiet. I would like to experience the bathhouse next time I stay.

Good location with option of western &Japanese style rooms and tranditional Japanese architecture. Great and helpful English speaking receptionists.

We booked this hotel for the purpose of staying in a Japanese-style garden for one night. I didn't expect it to be quite internationally friendly. There were foreigners at the front desk who spoke English and Japanese. They were afraid that you wouldn't know how to find food, so they provided nearby restaurants, convenience stores, and vintage stores suitable for foreigners. What was surprising was that these stores basically had English menus, and they wouldn't waste time gesturing with you, which improved efficiency. There was a vintage store on the first floor, and the store owner was very enthusiastic. After you got dressed, they would take you around the hotel to check in, for fear that you wouldn't make a good photo. The price was fair, and the most important thing was that it was easy to return the clothes. We rented a half-day 4-hour package at noon, and the boss lady only asked us to return it to the hotel front desk before 11 o'clock tomorrow. During this half-day, we took the wrong bus to Osaka in kimonos, as if we were going to a comic convention and taking the subway, which was too social. In the evening, we went to the recommended Sukiyaki, and returned to the hotel front desk at 11 o'clock in the middle of the night.
The room can really be described in four words: the house is bare, there is no TV, but the bathroom is extremely clean, and even the sewer pipes are shown to you, for fear that you would say it is dirty. If you have a set of Japanese tea sets, it will be more convenient to make tea art films.

Many foreigners live here. The lobby is nice. I'm a little uncomfortable sleeping on tatami.

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was quite an enriching experience having to sleep on a Japanese style bed. Initially we were stunned by the mattresses and set up as we forgot that we booked the Japanese beds, but it exceeded our expectations as we slept pretty well on it. The blanket was HEAVENLY & FLUFFY - an absolute joy. Definitely a thing I missed when I returned home. The toilets were decent and the showerhead water flow was good.

Service wise - the rooms were cleaned daily and they did help keep the mattresses during the day. We also paid to have a 40mins private onsen experience for about 500 yen. Pretty alright, esp if you would enjoy some privacy. Do reserve beforehand with the front desk. Additionally, the staff were able to converse in many languages & were always very helpful! :)

Location wise - it's pretty convenient & accessible. We were surrounded by lots of cafes & shops that we can explore just by walking around the neighbourhood. Many temples & tourist spots were within walking distance too.

The only irk we had was the noise and soundproofing as we could hear people outside & whenever they walked around or by the stairs. Sometimes, the roadside can be noisy too.. so it did affect our sleep sometimes.

But regardless of that, it's a pretty decent spot to crash when you're in Kyoto! Do give them a try!
