Reviews
The hotel lobby isn't large but is elegantly simple, and the air freshener smells lovely. On weekends, they even provide thoughtful welcome drinks, and the children received a delicious chocolate milk.
The sea-view room offered beautiful scenery. I had mentally prepared for a small room, but it actually felt more spacious than I expected. It was well-equipped, with a capsule coffee machine and a filtered water tap, plus a sofa that could be used as a separate workspace (reading area). The bathroom had a wet and dry separation, and the shower gel and shampoo provided were pleasant and effective; the attention to detail was evident.
What was most therapeutic was the large floor-to-ceiling window. I felt like I could spend the entire day by the window, watching the changing sky. Sentosa's sunsets never disappoint and are worth seeing 44 times over. If you want to venture out, Palawan Beach is less than a ten-minute walk away, making it convenient to reach the suspension bridge and the inflatable water park.
Additionally, while the hotel breakfast didn't have an extensive variety, the food was delicious. In the evenings, the rooftop infinity pool and bar were lively. We could order food and drinks and even saw fireworks two nights in a row, making it definitely worthy of a five-star review.
There's a large pool on the third floor, shared with the adjacent hotel, and it's quite spacious. It overlooks the MRT depot and various cargo ships. There's also a smaller, private pool on the rooftop. Both pools are very picturesque; in fact, even Singapore Airlines' safety video was filmed here.
I was assigned a lower floor, on the same level as the pool, which was convenient for swimming. From my window, I could just about see the Singapore Strait.
The gym is decent for a basic workout, with dumbbells and a small cable machine for strength training.
Getting to Imbiah and Beach MRT stations takes about the same amount of time. One route involves walking through a linkway and a parking garage, while the other goes down an elevator from the rooftop platform, then through another linkway to the bus stop side. I recommend the Beach route, as it's easier if you're carrying luggage.
The only minor downside is that the entrance area near the car park felt a bit cramped and was a little hard to find on my first attempt.
Cafe and Restaurants near hotel
This was an enjoyable experience, with excellent service and well presented dishes. The decor was beautiful and the counter seating allowed us to watch the chefs as they prepared our food. We were sorely tempted by their discovery menu, as well as the huge Tomahawk aged steak, but the portions were just too large.
We opted for the dinner menu, at S$198 before taxes, with an additional $48 supplement to add a beef main course. The breads, as usual, were fresh and tasty. The amuse bouche of foie gras custard with Porto wine was interesting, though it was a little strange to have the foie gras as a cream. This was followed by Hokkaido sea urchin in a lobster broth, which was nice.
I liked the confit salmon and I guess my wife, who is not a fan of cooked salmon, liked the dish too. My main was duck confit, which came in a tea cup. While the duck was delicious beneath the pumpkin puree, it was unsubstantial, even with a side of the signature mashed potato. I am not a huge molecular gastronomy fan, and I really wished that the dishes were done in a more traditional way. In fact, I left the restaurant still feeling hungry. My wife opted for the grilled Kagoshima beef with Sarawak black pepper, and it was delicious, but there were only a few tiny pieces.
Dessert was dark chocolate fondant, with tonka bean sauce and chocolate sorbet. It was beautifully presented, if a little sweet. Our pot of Earl Grey tea was weak, but we loved the galette and Madelines which ended the meal.
Our main male server, as well as the other female servers, were friendly and warm, and took pains to describe the dishes.
Parking at the basement can be confusing, as we had to go around looking for the blue lots. Thereafter, instead of following the signage and rather convoluted route for Hotel Michael, just head to Festive Walk food street, where you can find the restaurants at one end.
