Singapore Shangri-La: An Exploration of Southeast Asian Hotels

Opened in 1971, this hotel holds significant historical value as it's the very first property in the entire Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts group. Thanks to excellent upkeep, it doesn't feel old at all. It features three wings in total: Tower, Valley, and Garden. I stayed in the Tower Wing this time. The room was quite spacious, though its irregular shape took a little getting used to. The hotel breakfast was a bit pricey, so I skipped it, but I did enjoy the pool and Health Club twice during my stay.

The pool is an impressive 2.5 meters deep, which is quite rare for a hotel. The Health Club is fantastic, offering a sauna, steam room, and a hydrotherapy pool.

A luxurious weekend spent at Shangri-la’s Valley Wing! From the large and comfortable room to the impeccable offerings at the lounge, this is one pampering experience that should not be missed.

I enjoyed my stay with Shangri-la Singapore. When I shared with them that I am celebrating my partner 's birthday during the stay, they offered not 1 but 2 complimentary birthday cake. The 2nd complimentary cake came as a surprise as they put it in my room while we were away. My partner and I were both pleasantly caught by it. Also, when we requested for additional toiletries and Nespresso capsules, they answer to my needs promptly. I will definitely stay with them again.

Everything here is really amazing! The pool the facilities and the ambience are superb. Its so so kids friendly especially there is a Buds playground inside and most importantly its free for first timers user for their app I think. Location of course, superb its at orchard road, and a little distance from the noise and central. They have free shuttle from hotel to Ion orchard and Takashimaya too hourly! Great stay overall!

The bed was huge and the room was spacious. The hotel's breakfast buffet was fantastic, offering a wide selection of Chinese, Western, Malay, and Japanese dishes, all of high quality. The laksa, in particular, was much better than what you'd find at many famous local eateries.

We booked a room in the Garden Wing, and the environment was absolutely beautiful. The room was also very large and comfortable. We brought a child with us, and by the time we checked in, an extra bed had already been added, so all three of us had our own comfortable beds. We also signed up for membership and received a complimentary breakfast for the child. The only downside was the terrible soundproofing. The crying and fussing of the kids next door sounded like they were right in our room – it was unavoidable. Also, while the breakfast was plentiful, it was the same every day, which got a bit repetitive after a few days.

Our family vacationed in Singapore during the Chinese New Year, and we chose the Shangri-La on Orchard Road. Compared to the Shangri-La Sentosa, the rooms here felt more business-oriented and newer. The breakfast was also superior. The hotel pool had a comfortable water temperature, perfect for kids. Although the kids' club charges a fee, it's quite spacious, and our child could easily spend two hours playing there.

The room was decent and quite spacious, and it was cleaned very well. However, being in Southeast Asia, it was a bit humid and stuffy; it felt damp at night without the air conditioning. The outdoor pool was fantastic and open until 8 PM. The kids' water park, though, closed at 6 PM every day. It would be great if they could extend its operating hours a bit later, perhaps until 7 or 8 PM.

• The iconic wavy balconies are covered in bougainvillea. Looking up from the pool, it resembles a hanging aerial flower house suspended within a coconut grove.

• The silver fish art installation in the lobby looks like an entire pond of tropical fish has been 'hooked' onto the ceiling. Every photo taken here is a masterpiece.

🛏️ Room: Vintage Elegance, You Won't Want to Get Up

• The rooms boast the classic Shangri-La style: warm wooden furniture, bedding so soft you sink right in, and towels embossed with the brand's logo. Every detail exudes the ceremonial feel of old-school luxury.

• The bathroom is spacious and bright, with exquisite amenities. Even a Nespresso capsule coffee machine is thoughtfully provided, making for a perfect start to your morning and instantly boosting your mood.

• Open the window to a panorama of lush greenery. Occasionally, you might even spot red junglefowl strolling on the lawn, instantly transitioning you from city life to vacation mode.

• The expansive outdoor pool is surrounded by palm trees and tropical flowers. Lounging on a deckchair, listening to the fountain and birdsong, time seems to slow down.

• The hotel also thoughtfully provides childcare and family activities, allowing parents with kids to truly relax and enjoy their own holiday.

If you ask me if I'd stay here again on my next visit to Singapore? The answer is: absolutely! After all, who can resist the feeling of waking up in a tropical garden, gently roused by coconut groves and birdsong?

The overall environment is excellent, making it a great choice for families with children. I booked a king-sized bed room, and since I had a child with me, they arranged a sofa bed. They even knew it was my child's birthday and sent a small cake in advance, which I really appreciate from both the hotel and Trip.com staff. If I had to pick a small flaw, it would be on ***** New Year's Eve, when I was staying in room 827. The housekeeping staff left a towel on the table and didn't replace the toilet paper, which had run out. They also provided one less towel than usual. I tip every day, so I assume they were just very busy and had different staff that day. However, this doesn't stop me from giving the Shangri-La a five-star rating. I look forward to staying here again!
