KUN MING UPLAND INTERNATIONAL YOUTH HOSTEL in Kunming

Great vibe in the hostel. Very good shared spaces, lovely atmosphere, restaurant on diet serving a variety of dishes at very reasonable prices - all we tried was tasty, both evening meals and breakfast. We had a private room with bathroom, which was clean and nice. Staff nice and helpful. Very close to Green Lake Park and Old Streets of Kunming. A short walk to the metro station.

The location is perfect, very close to Cuihu Lake and the subway station, and the surroundings are quiet. The staff are also great. The terrace is large, and there are many foreigners. The laundry room has dryers, which is very convenient. I stayed for three nights and really enjoyed it. I especially love Kunming and will come back countless times.

The advantages are that the common areas are very spacious, and there's a cafe that's open all day, perfect for organizing events or working alone. The hostel also hosts different activities daily, creating a great atmosphere. It seems like takeout food needs to be eaten in the outdoor common area.

Slippers, water, toiletries, etc., are provided, and the slippers are convenient for showering.

The front desk is on the first floor. You need to take the stairs to the third floor to reach the cafe and the elevator to the rooms.

The location is excellent, right near the subway station, and within walking distance of Cuihu Lake and Kunming Old Street.

The downsides are that the whole place is quite old. The elevator and laundry room are old and dim. You can tell the cleaning staff cleans frequently, but the mold and black stains in the bathroom and toilet just won't come off. Occasionally, there's still a sewer smell.

The bunk beds for sleeping are good and look quite new.

Each floor has a few rooms, one shower, and two toilets. If the shower on my floor is occupied, I'd go up or down a floor to shower, but I still worry about there not being enough showers when it's busy. Also, although the shower looks like it has a wet/dry separation, the curtain doesn't stop the water from spraying out, so the floor ends up completely wet – a bit of a shame. However, having a chair and hooks is much more convenient!

I ended up extending my stay for another night immediately after the first one. (Personally, I think the 8-bed dorm is even better than the 6-bed one – in the 8-bed, six people are separated from four, giving you a bit more space. The 6-bed dorm by the window has a smoking and chat area right below it at night.) The location is excellent; it's just across the street from Cuihu Park, a quick walk across the road and down some steps. It's also within walking distance of the subway station, and the area isn't noisy. The morning sunlight is lovely when you wake up.

The front desk staff are very attentive; they helped me with my luggage and guided me upstairs. The online customer service was also very responsive. The cleaning aunties were responsible and thoughtful. You use a card to enter, and there are lockers above where you can put things. Inside the drawers, there are bath towels, water, and a care kit (which even included fringe stickers!). There are also disinfected slippers. The bed was comfortable, and the bedding, lights, and charging ports were all high-quality standard, plus there's a small bedside table. The bathroom wasn't crowded, and the toilet was convenient and clean. There's also a laundry area, but with limited hours.

The restaurant bar on the second floor has a great vibe. The corridor has swings and tables and chairs where you can sunbathe and have tea in the morning, or enjoy the breeze and chat at night. There were quite a few foreign friends there. Looking at the guestbook, the postcards downstairs, the message board, and the daily activity posters, it really feels like one of those rare places with genuine human care from a few years ago – or at least, it matches my impression of what a Yunnan youth hostel atmosphere should be!

If you need to book, it's best to do it in advance, as this place is quite popular, haha. Oh, and I highly recommend the Caoya Rice Noodles shop right across the street; I thought they were delicious!

I felt quite comfortable during my stay, no disappointments whatsoever. The room was meticulously cleaned, making it very relaxing to settle in, and all the daily essentials were well-stocked. It was super convenient for going out to eat or catching a taxi. The host was very genuine, responded to messages promptly, and check-in/check-out was a breeze, with no unnecessary fuss. It's rare to find such a great place to stay while traveling, I genuinely think it's excellent, and I'd definitely consider coming back next time.

The front desk staff were super friendly and even helped me with my luggage. It was a bustling place, great for meeting new people, and the food was delicious. It's also really convenient, close to both the metro station and the old town.

Facilities were great. Had everything that said would be included. The location is very convenient and close to city centre and metro. The vibe was also great. Really liked the bar and restaurant in the hostel.

This is my repeat visit in a year. Love the vibe, the food, the room, the set up & more. At prices which caters for most solo travellers. I feel totally at home here.

A small idea, with new tech a lift might possibly be installed, making it "accessible" from reception to common room, as well saving staff's carrying heavy luggage.

This is an international youth hostel, and there are indeed many foreigners here. The common areas have a great vibe, and the food and drinks are very affordable. It's super convenient, just a 2-minute walk to the East Gate of Cuihu Lake. If I could, I'd love to book it for two months next summer! Oh, a friendly heads-up: the room type I booked doesn't have air conditioning, only a fan. But it was quite cool, so the fan was perfectly fine. I stayed in room 506; the bed was very soft, the shower had good pressure and heated up quickly. The toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, and shower gel were all good, and the toilet paper was quite thick. The only minor drawback was that the electric fan was a bit noisy. My friend stayed in 606; their water pressure was slightly lower, but the fan was silent, though the bed was a little firmer. Overall, I'm very satisfied! The washing machine and dryer are also a nice touch. All the staff speak English. While it's called a youth hostel, there are actually people of all age groups staying here.
