I was originally put on the top floor (floor 4) and it was absolutely stifling. The reception staff suggested that I leave the room for a couple of hours to allow the room to cool down. But alas, I came back after 4 hours and there was zero difference. (For completeness, I left the room card in the slot to ensure that it would continue running.) And that is not surprising. I was on the top floor with the sun beaming down, so how could those “tiles” in the ceiling actually cool the room? After all… hot air rises.
After complaining, I was put into another room. Again, it was warm, but thought I’d leave the air con to do its work for a couple of hours. I noticed that the operator pad on the wall didn’t seem to work, so called reception and they said they would “reset” the system. See attached photo.
Anyway, I came back after a few hours, the room was hotter than before, and the new receptionist said that the air con for that particular room was faulty. Great.
So they put me into another room. This time, it was on the first floor. It made a big difference and the air con “seemed” to work, and I was OK to live with it for my 5 day trip.
I find it ironic that there is this “eco-friendly” air con, when the rooms have a big fan connected to a wall socket, needing to cool the rooms. Even one of the receptionists admitted that the air con system has been the cause of complaints that they’ve had to roll out the fans. I can’t imagine the electricity bill and emissions profile of the hotel as a result!
Regardless of the above, the reception staff were friendly and trying to do the best given the circumstances. The rooms are nicely furnished, are quirky, and well-equipped. And the location of the hotel is top-notch. Directly next to the U-Bahn and tram.
Hotel is decorated beautifully, Great surroundings, a bit noisy but close to public transportation, parks and coffees. Just Too bad no Frigidaire in rooms
Rooms for disabled are comfy
The rooms were a good size and clean. There is no air conditioning but they provided a fan which actually was fine.
We really enjoyed our stay here. Every single staff member we spoke to was so friendly and helpful - giving us lots of tips!
Love the special little details like a free treat tray with free toiletries, hand cream etc and free chocolate.
Highly recommend and would definitely stay again.
Service throughout was truly commendable. Staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful at every turn. The hotel bar is a genuine highlight—stylish, welcoming, and well-stocked. We especially appreciated the honesty bar and terrace upstairs, which made for a beautiful, relaxed afternoon during our stay.
Breakfast was another strong point, offering a good variety of quality options in a comfortable setting. The rooms themselves are well-sized, clean, and nicely appointed.
However, there’s a major issue that any traveller should be aware of: there is no real air conditioning. What’s provided is what I would describe as a comfort cooling system—more symbolic than functional. During our stay, temperatures hovered around 25 °C during the day and 18 °C at night, yet the rooms remained unpleasantly warm. Both rooms had fans, and the windows had to be opened to let in any real cool air. It’s quite clear that the hotel expects guests to rely on the fans, which is not acceptable given the climate realities of Berlin summers.
This significantly affected our comfort and sleep. For travel between late May and early October, I would strongly caution against booking unless you’re completely indifferent to room temperature.
It’s unfortunate, because in almost every other respect, The Circus Hotel is a real gem. I genuinely wanted to love it, and in cooler months, I very likely would. But the absence of proper climate control is a deal-breaker in warmer weather, and it’s clear the hotel is aware of the issue—hence the fans in every room.
Pros:
• Excellent location
• Superb service
• Great breakfast
• Fantastic bar and terrace
• Generous room size
Cons:
• No air conditioning—only a weak cooling system and fans
• Rooms become uncomfortably warm even in moderate summer temperatures
Conclusion:
A brilliant hotel during cooler seasons. But for summer stays, particularly with children or light sleepers, the lack of proper climate control unfortunately outweighs the many positives.
The location of the hotel is also great with being very close to the U8 that connects all major destinations and being close to the Spree and great restaurants as well.
Update: The Hotel provided me with a generous refund for the missed "Birthday Surprise" - well done Circus Hotel!
Past part of the review:
Unfortunately only three stars since the service of the staff is just below average and doesn’t fit with the rest of the quality of the hotel. The main reason is that we specifically chose that hotel since they offer the birthday surprise upon booking. It was even possible to change the chocolate for cheesecake which was nice! Unfortunately when requested only the cake showed up in the room, no sparkling wine, no decoration, nothing. The receptionist working told me that the only information provided was to bring the cheesecake up so we had to get the sparkling wine ourselves at the reception. When we checked-out or after no apologies, no refund, no nothing.
You can do better!
