Description

The Circus Hotel in Berlin offers a blend of historic charm and modern amenities, housed in a building constructed in 1879 and renovated in 2008. It presents a range of room types from Standard Single rooms to spacious Grand Apartments, catering to solo travelers, families, and groups alike. Guests appreciate the clean, well-decorated rooms with comfortable beds and thoughtful touches like free toiletries and a welcome note. The hotel features a lively bar and terrace area, ideal for evening relaxation or pre-theatre drinks. While the hotel advertises air conditioning, the cooling system is unconventional and has received criticism for inefficiency, especially during warm summer months. The friendly and attentive staff receive consistent praise for their helpfulness and local knowledge, enhancing the overall experience.

Location

Located at Rosenthaler Straße 1, The Circus Hotel is situated in the heart of Berlin Mitte. It is directly adjacent to both the U-Bahn and tram stops, facilitating easy access to the city’s main attractions. The David Hasselhoff Museum lies just 93 meters away, and notable nearby dining options include Restaurant und Café Bar - Gorki Park at 136 meters and Cafe THE BARN within 310 meters. For outdoor recreation, the BeachMitte is approximately 1.1 kilometers from the hotel. Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL) is 8 kilometers away, making transfers relatively straightforward.

Tips

  • If traveling in summer, expect warm room temperatures and consider requesting a room on lower floors for slightly better cooling.
  • Use the hotel's free bike rental to explore nearby attractions like the David Hasselhoff Museum and Gorki Park.
  • For dining, try nearby cafes such as THE BARN or the Gorki Park restaurant rather than relying on the hotel restaurant, which has received mixed reviews.

Well-located hotel with friendly staff. Unfortunately, the TV in our room was broken, but otherwise, everything was perfectly fine!

Thoroughly recommend this hotel. Really friendly helpful staff, lovely personal feel, the app is great for local recommendations, buzzy bar vibe ideal for pre theatre drinks or night cap. Room good size and clean. Location convenient as tube station 2 min walk. Will be back for sure!

The location is great, room was big and comfortable but no AC. TV not really satisfying most of it in German. The service was excellent at the reception 😁 but not at the bar/restaurant specially regarding food and customer service. Eat anywhere but not at the hotel. Very clean and neatly decorated. No Frigidaire....very inconvenient
You must pay 7% tax extra from price to the city

Very nice independent hotel. Convenient location with a subway station and Straßenbahn stops right on your doorstep. Slept very well, although because it is on a busy intersection it can be quite loud at night.

I have mixed feelings about this hotel, but would suggest to others to avoid like a plague, especially in summer. The hotel advertises itself as having “air-conditioning” but don’t expect the usual air- con with a duct so you can actually feel cool air blowing into the room and making a difference to the temperature of the room. Instead, they have this “eco-friendly” air conditioner, with no duct, which apparently cools the room with terracotta tiles in the ceiling. Does it cool the room? NOT AT ALL. Especially in a Berlin summer where temperatures can hit the mid-30s.
I was originally put on the top floor (floor 4) and it was absolutely stifling. The reception staff suggested that I leave the room for a couple of hours to allow the room to cool down. But alas, I came back after 4 hours and there was zero difference. (For completeness, I left the room card in the slot to ensure that it would continue running.) And that is not surprising. I was on the top floor with the sun beaming down, so how could those “tiles” in the ceiling actually cool the room? After all… hot air rises.
After complaining, I was put into another room. Again, it was warm, but thought I’d leave the air con to do its work for a couple of hours. I noticed that the operator pad on the wall didn’t seem to work, so called reception and they said they would “reset” the system. See attached photo.
Anyway, I came back after a few hours, the room was hotter than before, and the new receptionist said that the air con for that particular room was faulty. Great.
So they put me into another room. This time, it was on the first floor. It made a big difference and the air con “seemed” to work, and I was OK to live with it for my 5 day trip.
I find it ironic that there is this “eco-friendly” air con, when the rooms have a big fan connected to a wall socket, needing to cool the rooms. Even one of the receptionists admitted that the air con system has been the cause of complaints that they’ve had to roll out the fans. I can’t imagine the electricity bill and emissions profile of the hotel as a result!
Regardless of the above, the reception staff were friendly and trying to do the best given the circumstances. The rooms are nicely furnished, are quirky, and well-equipped. And the location of the hotel is top-notch. Directly next to the U-Bahn and tram.

Really an amazing place especially for the great people that works their. We couldn't go back home and they did everything to support us and let us feel at home as possible.
Hotel is decorated beautifully, Great surroundings, a bit noisy but close to public transportation, parks and coffees. Just Too bad no Frigidaire in rooms

LOVE the location - lots of great cafes, restaurants and shops. Great vibes and safe location.
The rooms were a good size and clean. There is no air conditioning but they provided a fan which actually was fine.
We really enjoyed our stay here. Every single staff member we spoke to was so friendly and helpful - giving us lots of tips!
Love the special little details like a free treat tray with free toiletries, hand cream etc and free chocolate.
Highly recommend and would definitely stay again.

We recently stayed at The Circus Hotel in Berlin, taking two rooms for a short family trip. The experience was, in many respects, excellent. The location is ideal—central, with easy access to public transport and within walking distance of a huge variety of restaurants and shops.

Service throughout was truly commendable. Staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful at every turn. The hotel bar is a genuine highlight—stylish, welcoming, and well-stocked. We especially appreciated the honesty bar and terrace upstairs, which made for a beautiful, relaxed afternoon during our stay.

Breakfast was another strong point, offering a good variety of quality options in a comfortable setting. The rooms themselves are well-sized, clean, and nicely appointed.

However, there’s a major issue that any traveller should be aware of: there is no real air conditioning. What’s provided is what I would describe as a comfort cooling system—more symbolic than functional. During our stay, temperatures hovered around 25 °C during the day and 18 °C at night, yet the rooms remained unpleasantly warm. Both rooms had fans, and the windows had to be opened to let in any real cool air. It’s quite clear that the hotel expects guests to rely on the fans, which is not acceptable given the climate realities of Berlin summers.

This significantly affected our comfort and sleep. For travel between late May and early October, I would strongly caution against booking unless you’re completely indifferent to room temperature.

It’s unfortunate, because in almost every other respect, The Circus Hotel is a real gem. I genuinely wanted to love it, and in cooler months, I very likely would. But the absence of proper climate control is a deal-breaker in warmer weather, and it’s clear the hotel is aware of the issue—hence the fans in every room.

Pros:
• Excellent location
• Superb service
• Great breakfast
• Fantastic bar and terrace
• Generous room size

Cons:
• No air conditioning—only a weak cooling system and fans
• Rooms become uncomfortably warm even in moderate summer temperatures

Conclusion:
A brilliant hotel during cooler seasons. But for summer stays, particularly with children or light sleepers, the lack of proper climate control unfortunately outweighs the many positives.

Nice hotel with an excellent location, the metro is just a quick step from the exit and the quarter is a real gem: shops, cafes, restaurants and bars set in an authentic context and not overly touristy as in other areas. We did not take breakfast service because there are so many good places to have breakfast around the corner. The only flaw, not a small one in my opinion, was the room cleaning service. Room really nice, comfortable beds, quiet, but unfortunately we found a floor full of dust from the first day ( also highlighted by the night light placed under the bed) which remained despite our requests for daily cleaning. Should be made more attention: hygiene is fundamental in a hotel room.

It’s a great hotel with a great location for a great price! I like the hardware of the hotel, the beds are comfy, there are great toiletries provided and the roof top terrace is also great!
The location of the hotel is also great with being very close to the U8 that connects all major destinations and being close to the Spree and great restaurants as well.

Update: The Hotel provided me with a generous refund for the missed "Birthday Surprise" - well done Circus Hotel!

Past part of the review:
Unfortunately only three stars since the service of the staff is just below average and doesn’t fit with the rest of the quality of the hotel. The main reason is that we specifically chose that hotel since they offer the birthday surprise upon booking. It was even possible to change the chocolate for cheesecake which was nice! Unfortunately when requested only the cake showed up in the room, no sparkling wine, no decoration, nothing. The receptionist working told me that the only information provided was to bring the cheesecake up so we had to get the sparkling wine ourselves at the reception. When we checked-out or after no apologies, no refund, no nothing.
