Rethymno Palace in Adelianos Kampos

I stayed at Rethymno Palace recently and had a very frustrating experience in its restaurant. When I came in for lunch, I was wearing a long garment that covered everything besides my arms and reached below my knees. A staff member approached me and told me I needed to change into “other clothing.” Wanting to avoid conflict, I went back to my room, changed into a top and a skirt, and returned to finish my meal.
Shortly after, the same staff member came to my table and told me again that I could not “look like this,” apparently implying that my skirt was too short. The hotel’s dress code does not mention skirt length, and many other guests were dressed far more casually (in shorts, flip-flops, etc.— not in line with the stated dress code) without being approached. It felt very clear that I was being singled out because of how I dress and my alternative style.
This was particularly upsetting because I am not used to being judged for what I wear. I came on vacation to Greece, an EU country known for modern views on clothing, and I packed clothes that are perfectly suitable for the hot seaside climate.
When I went to the reception to address this, I was told it was “for my own protection,” which I found extremely inappropriate and discriminatory. This also raised the uncomfortable question: should I be concerned about my safety at their hotel? Rather than ensuring equal treatment for all guests, the responsibility was shifted onto me, as though I was the problem simply for dressing differently.
This experience made me feel judged and unwelcome, even though I made every effort to follow the stated rules, dress suitably for the conditions, and remain polite and understanding. I hope management reflects on this and ensures all guests are treated equally and respectfully in the future.
