Hotel Aleksandar in Budva

Not really a hotel more like a motel, we came all inclusive but a strange set up, food was ok but a strange selection like Brussels and chips with breakfast. Room was nice and clean but faced the pool which would normally be good. It appears that the hotel has lots of events so we had to endure 4 days of pumping loud hard house music for up to 12 hours a day, until midnight on Saturday, you couldn’t relax by the pool or even have windows open and even with windows closed it was so loud, really spoilt or holiday. Also an open air night club just outside the front of hotel grounds which closed in October but I think could be an issue in summer as it closes at 4am. If you want to relax don’t come here.

On the face of it, this is a nice hotel - but there are numerous issues that combine together to significant spoil the experience. If this had been a three or two star hotel I would have rated it a bit higher than I have. However, it is described as a four star hotel. Check-in was an utterly shambolic experience. We were waiting more than an hour past the official check-in time while the receptionists checked in a large group... this included us witnessing the male receptionist shouting at the group leader. It all came across as massively unprofessional and disorganised. Even in our own group they struggled to find one of the reservations.. everything seemed to rely on paper - computers seemed incapable of helping to find a reservation(!) Why, with quite a few receptionists, they couldn't have just had a separate desk for tour groups is beyond me. Another thing to be aware of is that the reception retains passports against payment, which can cause considerable anxiety for a business traveller whose payment is often done via P/O rather than by the traveller themselves. Why they can't just take a swipe on a credit card against payment, like any other hotel, is baffling. Retaining passports is a very dubious practice and travellers are basically being asked to go against their own government's advice on the handling of such documents. I personally had no issue, but several of my colleagues were considerably stressed by this practice and spent a lot of time on the phone to their company's travel agency and running to and fro to reception to ascertain whether or not bank transfers had come through. Utterly unnecessary and by doing this the hotel is showing a complete lack of awareness of normal practice in business travel -- which isn't great given they are hosting multiple conferences and workshops. The first room I was put in absolutely reeked of mould. Having just gone through the horrors of check-in however I did not immediately attempt to switch rooms. When I finally tried I was literally just told "come back tomorrow morning"(!) by the male receptionist. I went back the next morning and was then told to come back at 12. Finally then they moved me - to a much less smelly room. However at no point did anyone apologise or apparently acknowledge that the hotel had screwed up by failing to maintain its premises. Aside from the original stink, the rooms were OK - a little small, but no other obvious upkeep issues. There was a fridge but no minibar. Bizarrely my first room contained a kettle. But no mugs. No coffee. No tea. No sugar. Even the sorts of basics you would expect in a 2 star were absent. There was also no bottled water - which is pretty much a staple in any 4 star property. My room was serviced daily... one bizarre feature however in this hotel (it happened in both rooms) is that staff will attempt to come into the room without any indication that they're about to do so.
