The Marketplace by Storytellers in Funchal

Marketplace kindly let us rebook our room after our flight was cancelled due to high winds at Funchal Airport. However we were disappointed to find that our room had been downgraded with no prior warning.

When we realised, we confronted them about it. They explained the larger room that we'd paid for wasn't available for our new dates. It would have been nice to know this in advance as we could have either chosen different days or gone somewhere else. We'd reserved and paid for the larger room for a reason. Even an apology would have been appreciated.

To be honest, their communication was really bad . There was no-one on-site to speak to about any issues. We stayed from Saturday to Wednesday, and they only came to "check us in" on Tuesday.

Aside from this the room was pleasant enough. Breakfast at the café was a bit boring: it consisted of 3 bread rolls and a croissant, pretty tiresome every morning.

Overall great accommodation but some glitches with description of property. We booked this apartment as it was in downtown Funchal for the New Year’s Eve fireworks. It was for our family of four adults, ourselves,our daughter and her boyfriend. it was listed as a one bedroom apartment, however on arrival it was actually one large studio apartment with an archway leading from the kitchen living area to the main sleeping area. This was not suitable to us as there was no privacy we did contact the travel company, but there was no alternative available. This is our fifth time to Madeira and if we wanted to go just as a couple for a short break, we would stay in this apartment again but I would suggest anyone wanting a true one bedroom apartment with a separate sleeping area, or staying for longer than a week, look elsewhere. The standard of the apartment was very good and the cleaning was excellent with regular bedding and towel changes and daily cleaning service , even on New Year’s Day. The location for the old town was great with loads of restaurants and cafés nearby. The washing machine came in handy, especially after wet hikes, and there is a large supermarket just across the road.
