Hotel Quintinha São João & Spa in Funchal

Spent a wonderful week at this fabulous hotel at the end of January. All of the staff, without exception, were superb and very hardworking and I felt well looked after. My room was spacious and immaculate - very clean. Reception staff were welcoming and approachable. The bar is very comfortable with plenty of room and the bar staff were very friendly, remembering my preferences from day to day. The hotel restaurant was superb - both breakfast and dinner. It was my first time in Madeira and I had only booked B&B because friends had told me there were plenty of good restaurants in Funchal - which there are. However, the food at the hotel was so good, I ate there five times during my week. There is a wide choice at breakfast, with hot food cooked to order. Excellent waiting on staff and a skilled chef and kitchen staff. The hotel has some beautifully kept gardens, two pools and a spa which I did not use on this visit. My first visit to Madeira and the Quintinha São João contributed a great deal to the enjoyment of my trip. There is still much of the island to explore so I have booked a return visit next year!

Spent a wonderful 4 nights at this elegant, well run, well staffed hotel. It was our first visit to Madeira and the hotel made it a pleasurable one. The rooms are spacious and the bed very comfortable. Our room had a balcony over looking the gardens (nice touch). There is a courtesy bus that runs during the week that takes guests too and from Funchal. The restaurant, including breakfast, was excellent and the staff even better. They were always friendly and attentive and upon finding out my wife was lactose intolerant proceeding to make her daily deserts. I used the indoor swimming pool which was just the right temperature. Over all an excellent stay.

What an amazing find…. This hotel is practically perfect. 42 rooms - ours had a huge comfy bed, sofa , desk, balcony overlooking the beautiful gardens, and so much more. A few welcome goodies in the fridge and bottled water replenished each day. The breakfasts and dinners were delicious and so well presented with loads of choice. The bar was comfy and also served small plates and tapas all day. But, as so many of the reviews have commented, what makes this hotel so special are the amazing staff, every single one. Reception were always happy to recommend trips, experiences and restaurants, providing bus timetables etc. Restaurant staff were always busy but had time for a laugh and a chat. The bar staff would happily mix you a cocktail. There was also a Poncha making workshop and Gin tasting session which were great fun. The staff behind the scenes are also worthy of a mention. Our room was made up and cleaned every day and all the beautiful areas around the hotel were immaculate. Both pools and pool areas were kept tidy and clean. The indoor pool was really warm. We have stayed in many lovely hotels around the world but this has to be the best by far. I totally recommend and will definitely stay here again if I return to Madeira in the future.

Our tenth visit to the Island and our fifth visit to this hotel. So you can guess we rather like it. Everything was as expected. A lovely characterful hotel with great rooms and facilities. Excellent restaurant for lovely breakfast and dinner. A good bar with a pleasant outside area which leads into a really nice garden. But as I say every year, the best bit are the staff. Whether in reception, restaurant, bar, housekeeping or anywhere else, they are all super efficient and so lovely and friendly. We will be back.

Absolutely fabulous stay. This is an intimate hotel with just over 40 rooms within walking distance of the ‘throng’ of Funchal. The rooms are beautiful and stylish and so are all the charming little lounge corners everywhere. Expect antiques rather than modern furniture, which makes the place very cosy. Important to many : the beds are very comfortable. Both pools are lovely, the spa is small but is for private use only (needs to be pre-booked), which makes the whole experience more relaxing as you have the place to yourself. The massage I had (the bamboo one) is one of the best I’ve ever had. The food is wonderful, the breakfast buffet is small but there’s plenty of choice and everything is very fresh and good quality. The evening menu is beautiful and reasonably priced. But more than anything it’s the staff that make this place so special. They are all genuinely friendly and super helpful and give you true personal treatment. They really want to make your holiday the best possible, which is so lovely. I particularly enjoyed the personal friendly treatment by the restaurant staff; despite working very hard, they always found time to personally greet us and ask how we were. Many of the hotel guests are of retirement age , but this is definitely a family-friendly hotel and I’d love to return here and bring my young kids along this time. Highly recommend to people of all ages!

From the second we arrived, the reception team was very helpful and welcoming . We were taken on a short tour around this small quaint hotel which had a nice indoor and outdoor pool and spa .There was some lovely seating areas and a bar. Then we were shown our amazing suite. Which had a very spacious lounge bedroom and bathroom all beautifully decorated and maintained. The balcony was also large and had amazing views of a hillside village that looked gorgeous in the evening when all the lights were on and in the daytime you could also see the sea. Breakfast was served in a relaxing room with very attentive cheerful staff .There was a very good choice and you wanted for nothing . The same room was used in the evening as the restaurant / Al le carte, and I have to say the food was exceptional Sara, the receptionist, planned a delightful coastal walk to a fishing village going through a gorgeous cave like tunnel. I really enjoyed that day and appreciated the time Sara took printing the map and bus timetables . The manager had a welcome drinks evening and chatted to everyone. We loved our golden wedding evening all off the staff came to say have a lovely time. The meal in the Al le carte again was delicious and a cake and wine was left in our room. A lovely surprise. Thank you so much. we have had the best time and will definitely be returning in the future.

This five star Quinta offers unrivalled standards of both service and care to every guest. Situated in one of Funchal's finest neighbourhoods, close to the city's vibrant centre, yet set in beautiful two acre gardens, it's easy to forget that a fifteen minute downhill stroll, puts you at the lovely marina with its fine selection of elegant shops, theatre, and night life. There is also a shuttle bus for the less energetic, or a cab ride costs around five Euros. This truly exceptional property offers the complete holiday experience with a fine restaurant which serves amazingly good breakfasts and elegant evening supper, whilst the spacious bar and terrace provides all day snacks in a relaxed atmosphere. There are two swimming pools, a fully equipped gym, a games room, a wonderful spa, and a large underground car park. Staff throughout the hotel are totally focused on their guests enjoyment and are always on hand to provide such services as may be required. As I spend 14 weeks here every year, the efficient and rapid laundry and dry cleaning services bear mention too. The common areas are spacious, filled with light, impeccably maintained, and a pleasure to relax in. Think of this Quintinha as your luxurious home in Madeira, I do.
