Reviews
The hotel itself is breathtakingly beautiful. The design and atmosphere are warm, stylish and instantly relaxing. It’s also pet-friendly, which was a huge plus for us. We travelled with our cat, who is usually very nervous, and she got cozy and comfortable in the room immediately – a great sign of how calm and welcoming the space is.
From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed, especially by Vanessa at reception. She remembered us from our phone booking, was incredibly friendly and kind, and went above and beyond to accommodate all our needs and requests. She truly made our stay special and deserves all the praise.
Our half-board experience was excellent. Breakfast is a generous buffet with plenty of choice, and dinner offers a “menu of the day,” with dishes changing daily – we were always excited to try something new. Desserts at dinner are served buffet-style with a great selection of sweets, fruit and cheese. Our waiter Numa was fantastic – very professional, kind and attentive, and he always went the extra mile to make sure we were well looked after.
The spa was the perfect way to unwind after a day in the mountains: a heated indoor pool with hydrothermal massage jets, a Turkish bath, traditional sauna and dry sauna. The traditional sauna was sublime, especially after being out in the cold. We had booked massages in advance over the phone with Vanessa, and we were lucky to have Jesús as our massage therapist – one of the best massages I’ve ever had. I slept incredibly well afterwards!
Vanessa, Numa and Jesús truly elevated our stay. Thanks to them and the overall quality of the hotel, if I ever return to this side of the Pyrenees, I will absolutely stay at Hotel Rutllan again. Highly recommended – for both humans and pets!
I'll start with the good.
- Fantastic location. Equipment rental just across the street, gondala and ski pass office literally a minutes walk away. Reasonably quiet and easy to find.
- Breakfast. We paid for breakfast to be included and generally was satisfied however hot coffee was elusive, was luke warm at best. But otherwise everything else was what you'd expect.
- The Showers. Good water pressure, always hot water available
- Free Lockers. Great for storing your equipment between gondola trips
- The bar. Barman was a lovely fellow. Has a big fireplace that makes it feel welcoming and cozy. Reasonably comfy with a very rustic feel to it.
- The spa. From what I saw the spa was reasonably nice, clean and well-equipped. Lady who manned the spa was super nice and willing to help us even though we didn't share any languages.
- Clean. While a bit tired I found no issues with anything actually being dirty.
- Housekeeping did a good job the one day I forgot to put the do not disturb sign on the door.
Now the bad is unfortunately a longer list than the good...
- As a single occupant I seemed to get put in one of the smaller, older rooms. Despite it having two single beds in it, I don't know how two people would have room for both their cases in a room that size. I barely had room for myself and my case lived on the other bed for the week. I also had a much smaller bathroom than my travelling companions (toilet was in the same room as the shower) and I also had no bidet despite one being advertised.
- The decor in the room is in desperate need of updating. The carpet especially, as it was peeling in places. Some of the plaster in the bathroom was also peeling and it also had some weird tiled carpeted squares on the ceiling. Generally needs some investment. It's not neccessarily bad, but I feel for a 4-star hotel it's not up to standard. Half way through my stay the bathroom light broke. Told reception and they said the bulb was replaced, however after checking if it now worked it was exactly the same as before.
- The room's temperature regulation is awkward. I had an old radiator that was far too large for a room that size and only had two modes. Off or full power. Not only that but the control was broken and I ended up fixing it myself so I had some sembelence of control.
- Extractor fan in the bathroom may as well have not existed.
- Bed were pretty hard, combined with the lack of temp control I had more rough nights of sleep than good ones.
That's just the room.
The first night we were there we ate at the hotel and the service in there was atrocious to be honest. We sat down at about 8pm and didn't begin eating until past 9:30pm. Drinks took forever. Portion sizes weren't consistent. Croquettes were cold. Other parties who sat down after us managed to eat and leave before we even got our mains. The food itself was okay, but we avoided the resturant the rest of the holiday. Nobody even apologised except one of the waitresses who I suspect only did so because we confronted them about the terrible service. Front desk also weren't the friendliest but I suspect that may have just been a language barrier issue. We had several issues with the room keys just not working, as well as the locker keys not working. Parking also wasn't free and was charged 12 euros a day. Even on the days when the car was only there for less than half a day.
In short, I probably wouldn't recommend this hotel. It has a great location but that's really it's biggest draw. It DESPERATELY needs some investment to bring it up to standard and considering the price + the fact it's supposed to be a 4-star hotel, I was pretty disapointed overall. First impressions with the resturant didn't help either.
The staff is very friendly, attentive, and eager to help—whether with recommendations or any needs related to the hotel. For example, guests can securely store their equipment and even shower after skiing, even after check-out.
The hotel offers a well-equipped gym free of charge. The spa isn’t free but is also nice.
The hotel staff were friendly and helpful, our room was clean well kept and more than enough space for a family.
Breakfast was great - full buffet with a mix of local and international foods - ate too much. Staff were great and really helpful.
The ski lift is 20 m from the front door and really easy to walk to, the hotel also has ski lockers you can rent.
There are a good range of restaurants within easy walking distance in La massana, as well as nice places for a drink.
The hotel bar had a nice fire and comfy seats after a good day on the mountains.
Would a happily stay again.
The pool access for kids is from 3pm to 5pm, which means you need to finish skiing very early to go with your k8ds to the pool.
Adults pay 14 euros, and they can access pool from 5pm to 9pm.
Overall is a great choice.
The restaurant is disappointing. Meals are, well, nothing special and on the low quantity side. The style is wannabe elegant, and the menu expensive. No wi-fi signal.
Breakfast disappointing too, with ok variety of bakery but poor protein choice. Messy and rushy service, Covid is among us since March and by August I expect that a restaurant learnt how to work well while respecting the necessary restrictions.
Some waiters are kind, some others not.
