Description

Jugendherberge Berchtesgaden is a 2-star hostel offering a variety of room types including dorm beds, standard rooms, family rooms, and studios. The property emphasizes self-service aspects common to hostels, such as guests making their own beds. It has free bike rentals, a garden, a games room, and a children's playground, catering to active visitors and families. Guests will find facilities like free parking and a bar on site. The hostel was rated 8/10 overall with consistent scores of 8 for cleanliness, amenities, location, and service. Breakfast is available as a continental, vegan, and vegetarian buffet, but some guests noted limited variety. Note that a mandatory membership fee applies for non-members, plus a city tax surcharge. Pets are not allowed, and the main guest must be at least 18 years old. Although some reviews praise the friendly service and comfort for a hostel, others mention issues with room cleanliness, limited electrical outlets, and inconsistent Wi-Fi availability.

Location

The hostel is located at Struberberg 6 in Bischofswiesen, near Berchtesgaden, Germany. It lies about 993 meters from the Haus der Berge - Nationalparkzentrum Berchtesgaden, a visitor center focused on the local national park's nature and wildlife. For travelers arriving by air, the nearest major airport is Franz Josef Strauss (MUC), approximately 120 kilometers away. The location provides free parking, but public transport options are limited; the last bus in Berchtesgaden runs at 8 PM, which may complicate late arrivals or departures. The hostel is close to Königsee, a popular lake, enhancing its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts.

The staff is kind and the room is not bad. The view of the room is good. But there are only few electric socket in 8 person room and the room doesn't have a lock, it's very unsafe. The bathroom and shower is mix beetween man and woman. The location is a nightmare for those wo use public transport. Also in day when I stay there is no boiled egg for breakfast. FYI ; in Berchtesgaden last public transport in 8 PM

Recently, I spent a night at a hostel and would like to share my experience.

Starting with the positives, the rooms in the hostel were genuinely clean, which is always nice. I was particularly impressed by the spacious backyard, which was a great place to relax. The hostel’s location was also very convenient, especially for cyclists, which is definitely a big plus.

Unfortunately, there were more negative aspects. The shower cabins left much to be desired: they were not very clean, and there were no soap dispensers, which was inconvenient. A major downside was the lack of electrical outlets in the room. For eight people, there were only three outlets, which is clearly insufficient. Additionally, there were no outlets near the beds, which also caused inconvenience.

Upon check-in, it was mandatory to purchase their membership. This is a strange requirement, especially for people who do not plan to stay there regularly. Although the hostel claims to have Wi-Fi, in reality, there was none in the room or the backyard, which was quite inconvenient.

The breakfast menu was very limited, offering only muesli, boiled eggs, sandwiches, and pancakes. People following a specific diet would be better off bringing their own food.

Overall, the hostel left an average impression. The price does not match the quality of the services provided.

The hotel rooms were normal size and had kids bed available. The bathroom was clean and good. The balcony was huge and had beautiful views of mountains. The cleaning of rooms and the whole property was very well maintained. Breakfast was good and had good options with a very cute pancake machine. The place is convinient with 839 bus which google map does not show as it makes you walk up hill.

My experience with them was horrible. I booked a room for 5 persons which included my father who is a senior citizen. We reached the place as per the informed check-in time and to my surprise the person on reception told me that I had no booking.

I showed him the payment confirmation and the booking confirmation email. After checking all these details he said I had a booking but someone from his fellow staff cancelled the booking without quoting any valid reason. This was not informed to me as well. It was 9pm on Saturday and I was left with no option to sleep. DJH offered me a room in the "KellerRaum" where there was neither mobile network nor washroom and absolute nothing I would say.

It has been like 1 week now, they haven't refunded my money and today morning one of staff member "Frau Müller" replied in a very rude manner and hung up without answering the query.

I was not at all expecting such disastrous service from Jugendherberge.

We thought we wrote already a review about our stay there in september 2021 but we forgot I guess or the shock about our experience was too big.
Anyway we payed over booking.com around 100 euro but when we arrived they forced us to become a member at german youthhostels and to pay another 15 euro p. p.. We re traveling a lot but even in nyc or vegas we never payed so much.
Anyway the staff was rude, the rooms dirty and stinky, we had to put our bedcovers by ourself, no wifi and when we were about to leave a very annoying german "fuhrer" woman demanded that we have to take off our sheets, to clean the room and to bring out the garbage.
To make it clear, we ain t have problems with any of this, we re not spoiled, but we payed 115 euro for a double room and for the most awful accomodation experience we ever had, what a disgrace.

The room that was given to us was dirty, way below the cleaning standards that one would expect. The breakfast was decent and the staff was nice. I would try not to come here again (or would choose it if I do not have any other option in Berchtesgaden).

Friendly personal, good price, beds are perfect to sleep in after long days. Overall a good experience.

Don’t listen to bad reviews from people who don’t understand the Jugendherberge concept in Germany.

+ pleasant personal
+ good breakfast
- bed sheets you had to put on bed on your own, self cleaning of rooms etc. You don't get anything....
- bitten by something while night, and when I read previous reviews, I' pretty sure, what was it
- had to wash all clothes becaues of possibility of bedbugs
- hidden payments (gloves, registration to "club of hostels"), in total + 18€
- personnel in kitchen didn't wear masks or gloves, but every guest had to use them. I found this hypocritical....
