Hotel Gerberhaus in Rothenburg ob der Tauber

We had to book a Friday night here at short notice during a trip to Germany, and most of the other hotels in Rothenberg were fully booked. The place is somewhat bizarre, essentially a café by day with rooms attached. We were phoned by the proprietor as we were driving down, to ask when we would be arriving, as she would be closing the reception by 6.30pm (this had not been mentioned when we booked). As we would be later arriving, she said the key would be left by the door for us. Upon arrival we found the key and assumed we would enter through the main door - however, this is the café and it took us a while to discover the hotel part is entered at the rear of the building, down a side street. The lack of information was not helpful. We had reserved parking in the garage, which was full, so parked further along the street overnight. Our double room was ok, but very warm and lacked anything useful - no mini bar, dimly lit with few sockets for phone charging. Also somewhat dated décor. The pillows were awful, resulting in a poor nights' sleep. Even worse was the inch step between the bathroom and bedroom, which meant I tripped up badly in the gloom, and should have been highlighted. Breakfast was ok, nothing special, and the room cramped as busy. At least we weren't charged for the non-parking! Plus side is the location is good and Rothenburg is charming, but there are far better places to stay.
