Wellness pension Coco in Ishigaki

As can be seen from my other reviews, I would like to say in advance that Japan remains my favorite travel destination.

I originally posted my review of February 4, 2026. After reading the hotel’s response posted on February 9, I revise my rating from 4 to 2. That's because I believe that how it responds to reasonable concerns is important. Also, I believe that repeatedly referring to a reviewer’s nationality in a negative context is highly inappropriate.
Due to the character limit of Google Reviews, and in order to clearly explain the reason for this update, I have retained only the Points to Improve mentioned in the hotel’s response and have removed the six recommendations and other comments that were previously included.

1. My Comment: Noticeable unpleasant odor in towels and bedding / Lack of room cleaning as advertised on the booking platform
---> Hotel’s Answer: According to the hotel, the odor resulted from not using fabric softener for environmental reasons, the booking platform indicating that daily cleaning was provided was due to an AI translation error, and sheet changes are available only for an additional charge.
--> My additional comment : At the time of booking, the listing stated “daily cleaning provided,” but this wording has since been removed. However, the listing still does not mention that sheet changes are subject to an additional charge or that room cleaning is not provided.

2. My Comment: At arriving, no staff was present. My name and room number were displayed in a visible location, and it was also clearly indicated that the room key was inside an unlocked room with the door open. As this information was accessible to anyone, it raised security concerns.
--> Answer : Ishigaki is very safe, that local residents do not lock their homes or cars, that no dangerous people stay at our hotel, and that there have been no crimes at the property for ten years, so guests do not need to worry.
--> Additional Comment: Many self check-in accommodations in Japan use lockboxes with passcodes to store room keys and provide the code to guests by email to protect guest safety. Is this because those locations are less safe than Ishigaki?

3. My: Insufficient soundproofing between rooms, a concern previously noted by many other guests.
--> Answer: If only your own voice could be heard in the world, how lonely would that be? Are other people’s voices necessarily unpleasant?
--> My Addtional comment : I enjoy conversation, but I do not want to hear conversations from neighboring rooms. Not hearing other guests’ conversations does not make me feel lonely.

4. My: The Japanese-style breakfast offered relatively few side dishes compared to the amount of rice, and the soup and fish seen in other photos were not provided.
---> Answer : People should eat healthy food, and our meals are organic and additive-free, made with carefully selected ingredients. Increasing menu variety by using convenient or additive-containing foods preferred by some guests is not considered desirable.By eating the hotel’s pesticide-free local vegetables, your body is said to benefit, even at a cellular level.
--> Additional Comment : Is this a proper response to my original question? NO!
Please compare the photo of my Japanese-style breakfast with other guests’ photos, all of which include soup and fish, and consider for yourselves whether there was any possibility of perceived differential treatment, alongside the repeated references to a guest’s nationality that was not stated in the original review by the guest.

Eco-friendly practices should not be confused with a lack of cleanliness. Not emptying a rain-soaked ashtray containing cigarette butts left by unknown guests in front of non-smoking guests' room for the entire stay cannot reasonably be described as environmentally friendly. While skipping daily sheet changes may be acceptable for environmental reasons — a choice I often make myself — it still requires advance notice to guests before reservation.
